An old traditional house made of wood and earth, with tree orchard and garden, delightfully placed near the edge the forest, in the National Natural Reserve of Vâlsan River.

Remote, but a great location of access to the main roads to/from BUCHAREST & TRANSYLVANIA: TRANSFĂGĂRĂȘAN, SIBIU, BRAN, BRAȘOV.

Originally, it was built and belonged to my grand-grandparents; we renovated in 2016, obstinately keeping everything we could in the wonderful original state.

Le logement
***The house can host 4-5 guests in the Attic, but for larger groups the spacious (27 square meters large!) and cosy Romantic Nomad Tent + double outdoor bathroom are available and can also host up to extra 5-6 people. Please check photos and description of the Tent here: https://airbnb.com/h/romantic-nomad-artist-tent-arges

# Summer 2020 update: A small and cosy office for online work / videocalls / Zoom conferences etc. is available in the Attic. Very fast internet connection via optic fiber.

Our house is located on a (very :) ) secondary road in the village, in a splendid and picturesque neighbourhood. The house is surrounded by our 4500 square meters (1.1 acres) land - orchard, garden, yard, backyard and pasture. And it’s also the heart of a small 1 acre (cca. 5000 sq. meters) homestead – inhabited by lambs, ducks, chicken and turkeys (not to mention the tender cats and the big & mild shepherd dog).

Long time ago, the cottage was inhabited by Lisandru and Avida. Nowadays, we – Cristina and Silviu (Lisandru’s great-grandson) take care of it. We are both freelancers – Cristina is an economist, and Silviu – a non-verbal theatre perfomer and M.A. in anthropology. After 12 years of living in Bucharest or wandering outside the country, we’ve had enough of noise, traffic jams and pollution, we got back to the roots and began working here: we renovated our nice and cosy cottage, we started gardening, we planted trees and raspberries, we made jams, jellies and liquors, we started growing poultry and lambs… and we never stopped since then :)

We are living here all year long, at the ground floor, with our 5 & 2 years old children.

You'll fall in love (we did also!) with the simple serenity of the entire place, with the wild birds' concerts in the morning, with the tender sunsets with a glass of local wine in the gazebo or on the picnic blanket in the garden, with the feeling of time slowly passing by in harmony. Seldom you'll see more (and sometimes even less :) ) than a car per day crawling along our narrow village road.

The house was raised in the 1930's by the builders' guild my great-grandpa was belonging to. After they passed away, in the 1990's, the house was not inhabited anymore until we started face-lifting it, in 2016. We tried renovating it respecting the wonderful cosy touch of the original house, using as many as traditional materials and techniques as we could, from wooden shingles roof, hand-made traditional-patterned ceramic tiles, to natural plasters and recycled very old alder wood, and keeping all the beautiful objects our great-grandparents had and reuse them and enjoy them. However, we equipped the house with all amenities necessary: fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, Wi-Fi etc.

At the floor level, there are two bedrooms, one bathroom, the kitchen and also the technical room.

Upstairs, accessed through a separate entrance, for our guests - there's a bedroom (called "The Night Sky Room" because of the large roof window through you can see the marvelous sky - no light pollution here, all stars and constellations available:), another bathroom (which may be shared if other guests book the other space upstairs) - and a generous L-shaped open-space which can be used as a big living room and, by night, as a space for sleep (the extensible sofa is placed in a niche providing privacy). Also, my tiny office for no-distraction computer work is available upstairs. :)

Close to the house there is a gazebo wrapped up in ivy, elderberry and grape vine (the place for having breakfast and dinner) the vegetable garden, the greenhouse and the orchard. The orchard is a nice place to take a stroll and drink a good coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. There are old apple trees and a lot of young trees we planted ourselves – cherry & sour cherry, plums & quinces & sea buckthorn, apples & pears. Also raspberries and currants. Also few kinds of mint and roses. And two old walnut trees. And a trampoline for energetic kids. And from time to time a hen or a duck that break free from the poultry yard :)

On the sides of the orchard there are the poultry yards – where chicken, ducks and turkeys live. In the backyard, close to the forest, there is the sheep pen (they’ll be happy to be fed by hand), another vegetable garden and some rows of young raspberries and blackberries.

There are three different entrances in the house.

Due to constraints imposed by adhering to the original architecture both bathrooms are a bit smaller than than those generally found in cities but they are spotlessly clean, well-functioning and contain all the essentials.

Oh, and under the house, there is a stone cellar where we secrete all the home-made delights :)

Accès des voyageurs
Fell free to drink your coffee in any of the verandas, to have a lazy walk in the garden, sit barefoot on the grass, read or sleep in the hammock under our ash trees, pick some raspberries or some apples, climb in the walnut or use any other space in & out the house at heart's desire.

Autres remarques
* Upon request, we happily cook breakfast, lunch and dinner – we prefer savoury local recipes, using basic ingredients from our very own land or nearby, which we cook slowly, in cauldrons or cast-iron pots. Home-made bread and 100% Arabica coffee. Not to be missed – we are in the Homeland of Smoked&Pressed Cheese and of Țuică (a mild and flavourful home-made plum brandy).

* The internet connection is fast, good speed (via optic fiber). Also, an office for videocalls / streaming / zoom conferences is available.

* Linens, towels, soap, shower gel etc. – all included.

* One of Silviu’s passions is massage (certified studies, using a professional massage bed). Be it inside home or under the clear blue sky, be it classical relaxing massage or foot massage or even using warm stones – this may be an experience to remember.

* Few bikes available to explore nearby gravel roads, pathways and hills.

*Since we live in Romania’s countryside, it is not uncommon to hear the dogs barking during night and roosters in the morning. For our guests having a quite shallow sleep, perhaps the best solution is using earplugs during night.

*Our children (5 and 2 years old) usually sleep like a log during the night, but once in a while there may be exceptions.

*Since we are surrounded by a natural reserve, it is not uncommon for bugs to sneak into the house from time to time. Still, there are no lethal insects in our region – but if this makes you more comfortable, you can bring your antibug spray.

*We don’t have any patch of perfectly short trimmed lawn or perfect plain piece of land, but we enjoy hundreds of wild plants, we don’t spray dangerous chemicals on our vegetables and trees just to make them look big and shiny. Beauty is everywhere here and we just try to keep the natural pace of all things around – which may not always resemble a Pinterest or Instagram photo.

*Given the drought of this season, the water for shower should be used responsibly.

The house is surrounded by the National Natural Reserve of Vâlsan River, protecting more than 300 rare flower and animal species, including the world's oldest fossil-fish alive, 65 million years old, they say: "asprete" (Romanichtys Valsanicola)!

The entire region is filled with beautiful old churches and monasteries, starting with the one in the village (built 1838), Brădet (14th century), Corbii de Piatră (ancient, carved in rock sacred place) etc.

For hikers & bikers: going north, you can either get to Vidraru Dam (alternative route), or start climbing to Moldoveanu Peak (2544 meters, the highest peak in Romanian Carpathian mountains). Or you can just pick up any road you like and start exploring. Beauty is everywhere here.

If interested in a ... town-break, you can easily access historical town of Curtea de Argeș with its stunning Monastery (former capital city of Old Wallachia, 13th century) - 12 km away, or enjoy the breathtaking architecture of Câmpulung (oldest city in Wallachia, inhabited since bronze age - year 1600 B.C!) - 33 km away.

Or you can soak yourself in Vâlsan river nearby :)

Whatever you prefer, we'll be glad to be your guides!

Long story short, I'm an independent visual theatre artist. When I don't play or rehearse in Bucharest, I keep a small old house & tiny farm in the woody hills of Argeș county, 150 km away from Bucharest, along with my family. I'm passionate about the simple old things. That's why you'll find so many at my places, inherited from my ancestors or even bought from all over the country. I'm passionate about real, organic, tasty, traditional and healthy food. We grow some of it :) I'm passionate about reading books. Paper books, not e-books (although I sometimes need to). That's why I filled the entire house with them and hope that I'll read them all at least until I get in my 70s :) Oh, yes, along with my beloved wife, Cristina, we grow a 3 year-old girl and... a few months old boy (updated: summer of 2018 :). We all happily live outside the city.
