Welcome to our 'Shack'!
This charming 2 bedroom home is located opposite Shelley Beach, backs directly on to Moruya River and is surrounded by National Park. It is cute, secluded and the perfect beach get away!

Le logement
History and the Home itself
When we were first dating, we rented a very rundown 2 bedroom shack by the beach here on the South Coast which we affectionately named ‘the Shack’. These were some of the happiest days of our lives, sitting on the deck, secluded to the world and listening to the sounds of the waves and nature. Several years later, after a move to Canberra, this Beach house came up for sale in South Head Moruya and we simply fell in love! Of course we also could not resist calling it ‘The Shack’ for our former love.
Originally constructed as a large shed, it has had a major overhaul in 2015 to make it the funky beach shack it is today. The ceiling is made from corrugated iron with large sections in clear laser light to act as huge skylights. The bedrooms have high corrugated iron ceilings, while the walls are also made of clear laser light panels to keep the whole place feeling bright and beachy. There are large windows that are either floor to ceiling, double opening panels or louvered so when the whole place is open you make the most of the sea breezes. There is also a HOT outdoor shower that is completely private and surrounded by the established palm trees so you feel like you are having a break in QLD!
Whilst it is a residential area and we ask you to respect our neighbours, it is fairly surrounded by bush land so when you sit out the back around the fire pit roasting marshmallows, it is easy to think you are in the middle of the bush somewhere!
The palm trees that cover the property were hand planted 30 years ago so are well and truly established. They are just gorgeous to look up and gaze at the stars through and give the home a real Queensland feel.
Amenities
This is our home away from home so it has a fully functional kitchen with all the plates, cups, cutlery, cooking gear etc you will need. There is also a new outdoor BBQ for your use. We try to keep as many basic supplies for you as we can - tea, coffee, sugar, sauces, soaps etc, however we do rely on our guests to let us know if something runs out so we can keep them topped up.
We also have a selection of games, and some basic books and toys for the kids including sand buckets and spades, and a port-a-cot bed for the little ones. There are also a few boogey boards available for your use plus the use of two adult mountain bikes and helmets.
Wildlife & Nature
As mentioned you are surrounded by natural bush here and the property itself backs on to reserve as well as the whole area being surrounded by National Park. At night it is not uncommon to have a visit from a local possum – sometimes it sounds like they are playing soccer on the roof! One of the males will also make quite a racket in the backyard, those that don’t know what a possum scream sounds like can get frightened but I promise they are harmless and quite cute!
If you walk to the large reserve on the cliff where Elizabeth St meets Coronation Street, if it is the right time of year you should be able to watch the whales migrate. We were lucky enough to see them just in October of this year. There is also stunning cliff top walk that follows the road of Elizabeth St that will give you views across all the beaches and river mouth and large pods of dolphins are not uncommon to see.
Walks
As mentioned there are some beautiful walks just along the road to take in a variety of water views. One of the best places to capture the view is simply right across the road. There is the ‘Old Pilot Station’, it is now looked after by a caretaker so you can’t explore the home, but it is surrounded by National Park so you can wander over and take in the views of the ocean, beach, river mouth, break wall and right up the river. This is the first spot we go when we come down, it’s an instant stress relief.
If you walk to the end of the street or the very end of the beach (depending on where you start your walk) you will come to the break wall, you can then walk all the way along this, on top will give you stunning views on the river and this is our favourite place to watch the sunset over the mountains. On a weekend you can also watch the skydivers come down.
Beaches, Surfing & Fishing
Some of the most undiscovered and pristine beaches are located in South Head, Moruya and several are within walking distance of the Shack. South Head Beach is the main beach, this is the long beach near the surf club. It is also patrolled in Summer and has an off leash section for dogs. Shelley Beach is the beach that is set up for camping and picnics, beautifully protected and great for surfing. The next beach around has no name and is as beautiful as it is unpopulated, you can access this by walking from the house down to Quandolo National Park and you will see the paths through to the beach. Because it is surrounded by National Park and Marine Parks please ensure you check the NSW DPI Gov website regarding any protected areas prior to fishing.
The river mouth is perfect for surfing on a good day and you will see plenty of board riders and SUP riders. Do not attempt this if you are not a fit surfer though as the paddle out is intense and we don’t recommend being the only one out there.
Fire
We have an outdoor fire pit ready for you, and there are plenty of marshmallow roasting sticks to find, however we cannot always guarantee there will be timber. We recommend if you are wanting a fire, you collect a bag of firewood on your way through Moruya.

Accès des voyageurs
You will have access to the entire home, plus the private reserve at the rear of the home

Pets
While we are happy for you to bring you fur babies, we do need to let you know there are not secure fences surrounding the property, we have tried to keep a very open bush feel. There are also two small dogs and some chickens next door plus an abundance of wild life so they do need to be fairly tolerant of other animals. There is an ‘off leash’ beach located on the main beach where you can take your dogs, just don’t forget to take a plastic bag to pick up after them. You also need to be aware that the property is mostly surrounded by National Park and dogs are prohibited, even if they are on a lead, rangers regularly patrol the area and they love fining people with dogs not in the designated areas.
Basics
Whilst we do our best to provide all the basics, we are at the mercy of what guests use and how frequently (ie, glad wrap, foil etc). If these are important to you, we suggest you bring some along. However we do leave some tupperware there for your BBQ left overs and would encourage you to leave any non perishable items for the next guest - don't be alarmed if you see some lovely previous guest has left you some sauces, we love the community aspect of this!
Linen
Please note that we do NOT supply linen, we have tried this in the past and because we are so far away it just hasn't worked. We supply all bedding (Queen size doona, double doona, 2 x single doonas and 10 pillows), however you will need to bring your own linen and towels.

Food
There is now a café at the end of the street (CURRENTLY CLOSED) that does delicious food and coffee. They are open Thursday to Sunday for breakfast, lunch and early dinner. There is also a local 'Sunday Session' at the surf club in the summer season.
Otherwise Moruya town centre itself has an excellent selection of food options and is only 10 minutes drive away with enviable golf course, and further great cafes, several pubs and shops if you wish to explore further.
Other Activities
In the home we have left a whole basket of pamphlets on sites in the area or ‘things to do’ so if you want to explore further outside of the home, we have tried to do all the leg work for you. If you love nature, you will not be short on activities on the South Coast.

When we first saw this house, we fell in love with it. Sadly we cant afford to live there full time so we thought we would offer it up for others to go fall in love too, even if just for a weekend! We are a professional couple in Canberra but originally from the South Coast, so this 'shack' gives us the opportunity to share a little bit of 'home' with some new people.
