Traditional Japanese architecture tucked away in a great Berkeley neighborhood. Peaceful and quiet but just a few blocks to UC Berkeley, all the restaurants of the "Gourmet Ghetto", and the North Berkeley Bart station.

Le logement

Traditional Japanese building with Tatami mats, organic queen size futon, and an "Ofuro"- a deep and luxurious soaking tub (similar feel to a hot tub). Entering the tub requires agility as it is high and you have to stand on a bench, sit on the edge of the tub, and swing your legs around. If you have any questions about that please ask (and see pictures). Lots of natural light with five skylights. Older wooden building with a somewhat rustic feel. The woven grass tatami mat floors have a noticeable smell of dry grass which we find to be lovely, but may not be for everyone. Comfortably sleeps 2 in new all natural foam mattress. Minimal kitchen with small fridge, tea kettle, and small toaster oven. We use fragrance free and non-toxic cleaning materials and provide Dr. Bronners hand soap. There is a fan available for use.

A little oasis of calm for me as I was in town doing research on the UC Berkeley campus. The skylights are lovely, and the space is quiet. I took advantage of the soaking tub one evening after a run, which was great! Zan and their adorable daughter were very welcoming and kind. Overall, a very pleasant experience! (Also, a tip for any yogis out there: there is a WONDERFUL vinyasa-based studio called The Green Yogi 2 blocks away from the tea house that offers 3 classes for $25 to new clients. Check it out!)

The Japanese Tea House is a beautiful space with excellent quality of workmanship and details! The hosts Zan and Rainbow were very responsive and had taken great care to ensure a wonderful stay. It was very unique to experience Japanese architecture and way of living during those 2 days we spent there.

Zan and Rainbow's tea house is literally a gem on air bnb. It made our NorCal roadtrip feel so much cooler, and the stay itself offers a feature to whatever your trip may be. A little pricier than most rooms, but definitely something you have to experience!

This place is amazing. Unreal level of attention to detail. From the tatami mats to the sliding room dividers, to the decorative wall paneling. The charming low table has a hollowed-out space underneath to put your legs. Mind-blowing!! All in all, a very relaxing space to meditate, read or work. Highly recommend soaking in the tub. Wish we could have stayed longer!
