Interaction with Guests

I plan to be only as interactive with you as you need me to be. I have lots of written information which you can go through at your own leisure after which I can give friendly advice and offer more help if required. I am a trained and experienced tour guide! Hopefully you will feel at home here and share times with us around food and fire. If you wish me to take you on an excursion, we can work out a budget.

The Neighborhood

Welcome to Muizenberg! Muizenberg is a seaside suburb in Cape Town. Here the beach is long and white, the waves are kind and sea is warmer and so is our hospitality! You can shop for provisions at the local shopping centre, find out about surf/kite lessons at the many surf shops, buy arts and crafts in historical Palmer Road, eat the freshest fish and chips at the sea, enjoy slow breakfasts at one of the many trendy restaurants, cafes and coffee shops, experience the local vibe at our Friday night market, limber up at a yoga studio and so much more - and all this within walking distance of the house!
This environment is just bursting with possibilities. We are outdoors people and really enjoy what this area has to offer us and we will enthusiastically help you plan your itinerary while you stay with us. Whether it is doing something on our doorstep like swimming, surfing, kite-surfing or watching whales from the beach, canoeing or fishing on our Zandvlei tidal estuary, hiking up our mountain, browsing through quaint shops in Kalk Bay, visiting the picturesque fishing harbour or visiting one of Cape Town’s favourite tourist destinations such as Cape Point, the penguins at Boulders Beach, Table Mountain Cableway, a winelands or township tour, or Kirstenbosch Gardens, we have all the info for you and will help you as much as we can to get the most out of these excursions.

Getting Around

Muizenberg and False Bay stations on Metrorail's Southern Suburb's or Cape Town - Simonstown line are within a 10 minute walking distance from the house. False Bay Station is a little bit closer to the house, but I like to get off at Muizenberg Station because I like to see the sea and walk along the beach a bit on the way home. From the airport you could take a taxi straight to the house or get on the shuttle bus into the city and from there a train to Muizenberg.

Other Things to Note

This is a no smoking house.
This is an enviro-friendly house, so please help us save water, electricity and recycle your rubbish where possible.
If at all possible, please arrange you arrival during the week as we would like to be able to enjoy some weekends away from the house.

Viv’s house is very warm and cosy. A real surfers place. I felt home immediately and the big room is perfect. You share the kitchen with the other guests and that is nice. I would def recommend staying here. You can hike perfectly and the sea is very close by. Viv might lend you surf gear. Muizenberg is 30 min drive from the city. Perfect spot !

Viv is a very generous host. There was a welcome basket in my room with snacks and some fresh flowers. Just little touches that make one feel extra welcome. Viv is very knowledgeable of her community and always willing to help you find information if you have a specific interest or need. I will definitely stay there again if I have the opportunity!

Viv welcomed me with all her heart. She is a warm person and even moved me to a larger room at the same cost because it was available. She also advised on a few places I would like in the neighborhood like the Muizenberg Friday market, Indian restaurant etc. All in all, a very happy stay. I would definitely recommend Viv to all :)

I am in my 60s, happy, busy and free-spirited. My dog is my favourite friend and all-time companion. I deeply love and am proud of my two strong, beautiful daughters both in their 20s. I love mountaineering, hiking, surfing and pottering around at home. I have a passion for Rock Art and have spent years exploring the shelters in the Western Cape, finding paintings and artefacts. I am a keen botaniser and know and love the "fynbos" biome around me. I’m happiest in the mountains, hiking, climbing, camping or walking my dog on a path.

B-i-i-i-ig things in my life have been the birth of my daughters, climbing a 6000m peak in Peru, crossing the Atlantic in a yacht and being temporarily struck down by a neural disease. However, I constantly find wonder and amazement in the small things in life - watching my plants grow, listening to my pug snore, riding a glistening early morning wave, coming across an interesting shaped rock on my walks, listening to great young jazz musicians and their South African flavoured compositions...

I listen to a lot of music, especially jazz and have evolving current favourites. I am prepared to listen to any music if it pushes some boundaries or is daring or is beautiful and gives me gooseflesh.

When I read, I like non-fiction. "A Short History of Nearly Everything" reminds me that I am made of stardust and that I come from a long line of surviving ancestors, so I'd better be thankful for being given life as a human! But "Life of Pi" taught me that life is what you make of it, especially when it comes to survival. "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" taught me that there are many different ways to view and experience life.

My philosophy in life is to care for the earth and be aware of my footprint. I have grown an indigenous garden from nothing, planted many trees and grown some of my own veggies.

My special gift to travellers would be to expose those interested, in a responsible way, to the amazing paintings, some thousands of years old, hidden in the rock shelters of the Western Cape. Not many people have access to these sites. I have a slide show and video of the San or bushman "trance dance" which I show under the canopy of the southern starlit sky before we go into the field and explore. Please note though, that this is a field trip which requires some planning and at least 4 days away from Cape Town.

My other special gift is what nature provides five minutes from my house - a lovely beach and surf break - and I can introduce someone to surfing!

I'm happy to host just about anyone but particularly like people who are enthusiastic and thirsty for experience. I realise that at times that my home needs to be a quiet place for someone to recharge their batteries, so lying in the sun in a hammock or snuggling up in a cosy bed for days is also cool with me.
