The super nice owners of this simple coffee/bake shop also produce Albina City Nuts. We go here for their Spielman's bagels, egg + biscuit sandwiches and homemade chai. Our favorite. https://www.facebook.com/portsmouthpantry/

GREAT Thai food just blocks away! This is a no-nonsense restaurant with friendly owners and killer Thai food. The best part, you can order here, then hop next door to the Sundown bar where they'll deliver to you like it's an extension of their space (meaning, food will come on plates, not to-go containers). They are also great for to-go orders if you prefer to eat at home. http://www.yelp.com/biz/drunken-noodle-portland

Old school, North Portland gem. This restaurant is busy with locals (no tourists here!) and for good reason. The food is fresh, hearty and delicious. http://www.thefishwife.com/

This is a unique spot! They have live music frequently. This place is best known for it's iconic location, on Skyline Blvd. Plan to come here before or after a hike around neighboring Forest Park. The amazing outdoor patio provides exceptional view of the sunset over the valley. And the best part? They have communal grills, so bring your own food to grill and supplement it with a killer salad from the bar. http://skytav.com/

This is a GREAT tienda for Mexican ingredients (try their meat counter, where they also sell bulk queso), but the real secret is the simple restaurant in the back of the store. A popular destination for folks outside the neighborhood, the line can get long! But, it's worth it for authentic, simple Mexican food. http://www.yelp.com/biz/tienda-santa-cruz-portland-4

If we're feeling like a leisurely morning walk for breakfast, we'll journey up to James John Cafe. They have sometimes odd hours, and their food offerings can change, but they do a great meal and it's our favorite spot for breakfast in St. Johns. http://www.jamesjohncafe.com/

If Blue Star donuts isn't quite your thing, then maybe Tulip Pastry will be. This family has been making handmade donuts for 50 years at this spot (in fact, they JUST starting accepting credit cards not long ago). It's old fashioned and awesome. Not to be missed if you're into authentic donuts.

Pinky's Pizzaria. If you love pizza, whiskey and motorcycles, come here. Great place that you will NOT read about, it's mostly locals. If you sit at the bar, you can stare at their wall of rare whiskeys. And the pizza is awesome. http://www.pinkyspizzeria.com/

Drinks & Nightlife

Right next door to Cathedral Coffee, this sweet little dive bar is great for hanging out with the local crowd. No frills, but will suit your needs for an ice cold beer.

This is our go-to if we're meeting friends outside of our neighborhood. They do a great trivia night on Tuesdays, and have killer bar food. You'll definitely see some more hipsters here playing pool, but, it's Portland!

Parks & Nature

We have an amazing, enormous park 10 minutes away from us. Just over the St. Johns Bridge, Forest Park boasts more than 80 miles of trails. If you're a runner or a gravel road cyclist, bring your gear because you'll love it. The park is suitable for all fitness levels. http://www.forestparkconservancy.org/forest-park/maps/

Sauvie Island is a gem about a 20 minute drive north of us. It's great to cruise around the island via car, or bicycle. Lots of farms and a LOTS of u-picks. Depending on the season, you'll find u-pick berries, stonefruit, flowers, and pumpkins. There is also a beach on the east side of the island, which is very popular on a hot day. NOTE: you must purchase a parking permit to park anywhere on the island. These are available at the first market you see, on the island side of the bridge. Also, amenities are limited here, so fuel up and stock up on snacks. http://sauvieisland.org/
