Restaurants

Historic restaurant built originally for Charlie Chaplin. The space is beautiful (I like to sit near the windows up front) and the food is honestly stellar.

Mostly outdoor seating amongst plants and trees. Though only a few steps off the sidewalk, it feels like another world when you walk through the doors. It's cozy and charming and transporting. The food (Italian) is fresh, simple and delicious. I love the squid ink pasta and their cheese platter can feed a table of 4!

I know it's a chain, but their poke is really, really yummy. The kelp noodles and the bamboo rice are a nice base, and I love their yuzu koshu (Japanese citrus plus a mild chili) dressing. Load up on veggies and it's a healthy, quick meal.

Your typical Tex-Mex with colorful waiters. The guacamole is of course always a great starter, and the entrees are greasy and delicious!

A casual restaurant with outdoor seating options and very tasty food. Order their garlic dip, lemon potatoes and fried cauliflower for apps. I love the shrimp entree...but it's all so good.

I don't normally make it downtown, but this new restaurant is worth the trip. Israeli/Mediterranean with a twist.

DELICIOUS al pastor tacos. Night time is best, when the spit is out and the guys are flinging pork and pineapple as quick as they can. Great salsa bar. Standing room at a gas stop....tres romantical.

LA spots

Places I love to visit regularly.
Iconic observatory. Start at Trails Cafe and then cross the street through the park and walk up the hill (30-40 minutes) to the observatory. Beautiful walk with rewarding views.

The library is one of the best in the country, with collections of Shakespeare, Lincoln, a Guttenberg bible, Marco Pollo...it's incredible and on display for your perusal. The gardens are what I love to go for though. The cactus, rose and Japanese gardens are my favorite. You could spend an entire afternoon enjoying the outdoor areas and casually viewing some of the art.

Beautiful museum with an assortment of great works. I particularly like the East Asian and Japanese collections, but the special exhibits are usually worth going to.

Whether you have kids or not, this is an amazing place to step back in time and imagine what LA looked like when dinosaurs roamed here. Right next to LACMA, so you can hit both spots if you have the time.

A fun museum that looks back at the evolution of trains. Take your tiny tot for a train ride around the circumference of the park. It's a laugh.

If you're a car buff, this museum will make your brain explode. They also do a private vault tour where you will see not only famous cars (the batmobile, the first electric cars from the 1920's, formula one winning cars, cars from movies like Herbie, Back to the Future...), but private collections of fancy people who just store there cars there. It's wonderful. I'm not even into cars and I love it!
