A shortcut to Hook Head in Wexford: We really recommend a day trip of taking the scenic car ferry from Passage East in Waterford (15 mins drive) to Arthurstown in Wexford to access the world's oldest still operating lighthouse at Hook Head (where there is also a nice cafe & shop). While there, drop into the home of chef Kevin Dundun at Dunbrody House which is near Arthurstown. Have a quick lunch in 'The Local Pub' on the grounds where you can indulge in delicious beer-battered Fish & Chips, crispy stone-oven baked pizzas, Gourmet Burgers...best washed down from a selection of ice-cold beers, local gins, artisan cider or organic wine. Or sample the Champagne Seafood Bar Terrace which can be enjoyed on the sunny garden terrace or inside by the fireside. Visit the scary and impressive historic Loftus Hall (on the way to Hook Head) for a tour that you won't forget! Explore the fine beaches in the area (don't miss the stunning Baginbun Beach for a swim!).

The two beaches near The Strand (Lawlor’s & further along, Councillor’s) are sandy and ideal swimming. At low tide you can walk from Lawlor’s to Councillor’s. Check tides online daily to plan your swims Ladies Cove is the nearest to the house is stony so better with water shoes. It’s secluded and a lovely spot for a dip. Access from the lane opposite the church. From the park and village road you can access Stony, Mens & Badgers Coves via steps down. Badgers Cove is our favourite for a dip. When the tide is in, there’s steps down to the sea and you can swim around the caves and rocks. It’s bliss. The cove has a lovely secret sandy beach when tide is out.

Balllymacaw is a very attractive, out of the way cove, not well signposted and not very well known. If you do find it is well worth the effort. The cove is sheltered by small, rocky cliffs on either side. Access to the water can be from the rough slipway which leads to the small, stony beach. From here there is a gradual wade in so it’s good for children. Alternatively, you can follow the rough path to the left of the bridge which leads you to a small pier cum landing area. The steps here bring you into clear and deep water, even when the tide is low. The beach here is more stones than sand and when the tide is in it gets covered so don’t come here with too many buckets and spades. However, if you are looking for a quiet place for a good swim in clear water, then this is a good choice. Directions From Tramore take the R675 toward Waterford. Not far outside the town you take a right turn onto the R684/685 toward Dunmore East. Follow this road and watch out for a sign posted right turn for Ballymacaw . After this you are on your own as we didn’t see any more signposts and the cove itself isn’t signposted. Just ask the friendly locals

Guillamene Cove just beyond Tramore is stunning and offers spectacular cliff jumping or an easier area with steps down. Sea Brew coffee are there to serve you sausage blaas with your coffee. There’s picnic tables to dine at. This Is a lovely spot to visit whether you’re swimming or not.

These Authentic Japanese Gardens are set in the beautiful seaside town of Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland. These stunning gardens reflect the life and extensive wanderings of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world. The gardens pay homage to the fame he attained in Japan through his incomparable literary descriptions of the people, customs and culture of that country. Follow Lafcadio Hearn’s life journey, first through the Victorian Garden, then to the American and Greek gardens, until you eventually arrive in the Japanese gardens which feature many Japanese plants and Japanese architectural features. The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens are a haven of beauty and tranquility for all who visit. Children are introduced to these magical gardens through a special children’s discovery trail, secret pathways, woodlands and Lafcadio Hearn’s fairytales and folklore.

Food scene

East Pier arrived next to the fish shop in Dunmore East back in 2019 and ever since locals and visitors alike have been queueing up to get their fix of lobster rolls, crevettes, crab rolls & prosecco. The neighbouring food truck sells fish & chips. https://lovin.ie/food/combine-irelands-nicest-fish-and-chips-with-a-drop-of-prosecco-at-this-seaside-spot

Well know bakery in Waterford specialising in sourdough. Also recommend their focaccia, almond & chocolate croissants and excellent coffee.

Down at the beach you can dine on the terrace of The Strand and the food is great. No need to book the terrace tables but the fine dining restaurant does need booking. Crab Claws in garlic butter are a favourite. In 2023 they opened a new cafe close by called The Cliff. It serves breakfast and lunch every day throughout the year and from June it will serve Thai cuisine in the evenings.

Adriano Cavaliere and his team have created a classy, confident destination in Azzurro, on the Dock Road, just 200m from our house. It majors in the Italian classics: halibut and langoustines; linguini arrabiata; Azzurro bruschetta with Parma ham and Parmesan; half-a-dozen classic pizzas; monkfish scampi. Upstairs rooms have a lovely sea view. There are good menus for children, so Azzurro is the sort of smart family restaurant that doesn’t dumb-down. It’s very busy during holiday season in pretty Dunmore – in fact, it’s mad busy during holiday season, so make sure to book, or else get there early. There’s always a great crowd of locals and tourists, and a mighty buzz, especially downstairs in the charmingly eclectic bar, and Mr Cavaliere and his enthusiastic and well-drilled team work super-hard to make everyone happy. azzurro .ie

By car or bus you can easily get to either Waterford in 20 minutes. The Viking Virtual Reality Experience in Waterford City is unmissable for ALL ages! Book ahead by phoning the medieval museum. We love the Museum of Time nearby. In Waterford City we like Momo’s for lunch, Everett’s for dinner and for an amazing brunch in a “Breakfast in Bed” style, The Old Couch Café. With lots of foraged seasonal food, the Old Couch is very small so book ahead. They also do a tasting menu in the evenings. Other good cafes include The Parlour Vintage Tearooms, The Larder (sells the Seagull Bakery bread), The Arch & Blackfriars. If you are looking for a bar in Waterford, we like Geoff's for a lively atmosphere and the front bar in the Parlour Vintage Tearooms.

Tramore is a quick drive away and known for its wide sandy beaches (excellent for swimming) and surf schools. There’s also a skate board park and award winning Inclusion Playground, Amusement Park/ fairground (in season) and arcades. We love the Japanese Gardens in Tramore The original Seagull Bakery is also in the town. The recently opened Beach House restaurant is superb and you can believe all the excellent reviews! This needs to be booked well in advance. If you visit Guillamene Cove in Tramore for a dip you can enjoy a coffee & sausage blaa from Sea Brew Coffee. There is an area for the brave to dive from and another easier area for swimmers like me! Look out for the Unbeetable Food Truck for healthy lunches with vegan options. It’s at the Pickardstown petrol station on the way into Tramore and one of my favourite places to eat. And for a coffee / drink with a view, visit the recently opened One Waterfront is in Tramore town. We saw a lizard scampering up the wooden steps from the beach there!
