The Mariposa State Forest, 3,002 acres in size, is located in the northwest corner of Chenango County and straddles the boundary between Chenango, Madison and Cortland counties.
Morrow Mountain State Forest occupies 1,290 acres and is a primitive forest with few amenities. Morrow Mountain rises to 2,142 feet and is the highest elevation in Madison County. The only trail in the forest is a snowmobile trail that follows the Public Forest Access Road (see map above). It weaves from the northwestern portion of the forest to the southeastern portion of the forest. Although there are no formal hiking trails, hiking is allowed anywhere on the property unless posted otherwise.
Muller Hill State Forest is comprised of 3,090-acres and includes diverse terrain and habitats. More than 7.5 miles of forest access roads provide seasonal access for snowmobilers and cross country skiers in winter.
Texas Hill State Forest, is a 704-acre forest characterized by gentle and rolling terrain. There are no formal recreational trails or facilities on this state forest. A single public forest access road can be used to enter the forest. The forest is located mostly at an elevation of almost 2,000 feet and is about two and a half miles east of the village of Georgetown. Though there are no ponds or trout streams, a tributary stream to Pleasant Brook begins here. The forest offers good hunting for deer, grouse, turkey and woodcock.
Lebanon State Forest is 779 acres and is located on the border of Madison and Chenango counties between the villages of Earlville and Georgetown. There are no trails or facilities in this state forest but hiking is allowed anywhere on the property unless posted otherwise. The eastern boundary of the forest has a waterfall of about eight feet. The forest is used by deer and turkey hunters. There are two parking areas on Bisby Road, and two parking areas on Carncross Road. Bisby is a plowed road, and Carncross is plowed in Chenango County to the south boundary line of the forest.
Stoney Pond State Forest consists of 1,469 acres and offers visitors an opportunity to view a range of different flora and fauna, hunt, fish, ride horseback, hike, cross country ski, show shoe, etc. Features the 44-acre Stoney Pond.

The 972-acre DeRuyter State Forest has a horse carriage trail that runs from north to south through the center of the forest. A public snowmobile trail passes through the property also running north to south. A section of the North County National Scenic Trail crosses the forest running east to west.
