Food scene

Note: This is now the Dark Horse Pub. Good local food in a historic tavern just a few minutes from the house. Craft beer and local wines, along with a rotating menu of specials. Great burgers. Must try the tofu appetizer with sweet chili sauce!

Great thin crust pizzas and other specialties. Attached to the Sperryville Corner Store which has wine, beer, cheeses and other essentials - expect to pay a premium for basics here as it's a local market not a huge chain store.

Like the name says - all solar powered. At the end of the village of Sperryville right on US 211, it's pretty much the last thing before going up the mountain to the park. Pretty riverside tables and creative food choices. I loved the Banh Mi and cold ramen salad. All local ingredients, only open for breakfast and lunch. Electric vehicle charging is available.

European influenced, Italian accented cuisine. Homemade pastas, the rye ravioli is fantastic. Good wine list and attentive service. Quiet, romantic space. Acceptable for well behaved children, reservations required.

Barbecue influenced menu. Awesome wings (Cajun dry rub is my go to), great smoked meats. Virginia's favorite are the brisket tacos. Creative tasty, cocktails and a decent craft beer selection. In a converted old gas station, which makes for an interesting space.

Very good, creative, locally sourced menu. Consistently great food and service at a reasonable price for what you receive. Well behaved children allowed, reservations recommended on weekends. Sunday Brunch, but check Facebook to verify, as it's not offered every Sunday.

Brewery

Small, local craft brewery with a beautiful garden for seating. The head brewer is usually on site and makes excellent beers. Do not miss this if you're a craft beer fan. In season, my favorite is the Pass Mountain Porter, a barrel aged porter in local Copper Fox Whiskey barrels.

NOTE: Same location, but now called Vibrissa. Great beers, usually including some historic styles you don't see everywhere else. They also offer food. Food service can be a little slow, so not a great choice if you're on a tight schedule. Food quality has been consistently improving since opening.

Amazing views set on a local farm. The beer styles are unique, cold fermented with a sour/tart profile. They're not for everyone, but it's worth trying as we've never encountered beers like this elsewhere. A favorite of Jose Andres!

Wineries

Smaller, local winery on a hillside. Distant mountain views, quiet and peaceful. Great wines, if you're a fan of Virginia wine. A little of something for everyone from sweet to dry. Our favorites are the blush, made with a mix of strawberry wine(sweet) and the Petit Verdot. Excellent staff, with a selection of snacks and cheeses. Two friendly winery dogs, Maggie (so cute!) and Vinny.

The largest local winery. Plenty of space for groups and families. Large lawn, plus new tower with views. Parts of the facility are 21 plus, so adults can have their quiet, private spaces. Also home to Dida's Distillery - did you know you can make liquor from grapes? It's less strange than it sounds. They'll also make you a cocktail from their products if that's more your preference than wine.

Okay, this is a bit of a drive but the view is worth it. The tasting room is on top of a mountain, wines are very good and the staff is great. If you're lucky you might catch a food truck on site. Crepes are a frequent visitor and a must have if they're on site.

Virginia's first and only beer museum. Located in an old, Victorian style house in Front Royal, each room dedicated to a different piece of beer history. Grab a pint and explore the rooms. Don't miss the old commercials room with videos of beer commercials across time.

I know most people come for the big name - Luray Caverns. Which is big and great but also comes with more crowds. Skyline is smaller with a great history, plus they still give guided tours which have been great each time we've gone. The guides are funny while being informative, plus there are formations here that aren't in any other caverns. It's older and not as modern as the facility at Luray, but it's all about the caverns and the tour.

A modern playground, as well as a historic wooden playground that's pretty extensive. Younger kids will love it. Shady places for adults to sit while the kids play.

Neighborhoods

The first of them all - Washington, VA is nothing like that other Washington. Small town charm with local galleries, a Wine loves Chocolate (tasty truffles) and one of the country's only 3 Michelin Star rated restaurants. If you didn't snag a reservation for dinner at the Inn, you're still welcome to walk the inn's grounds, see the gardens and animals. There's a walking path around the grounds that is open to the public. This is also the county seat, and you can see several of the historic government buildings including the courthouse, which is still our functioning courthouse today.

Sperryville is one of the villages of Rappahannock. Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen, Hopkins Ale Works, several small galleries and shops are here. Happy Camper, only open on weekends offers supplies, grab a coffee from Before and After Cafe before headed to Shenandoah National Park. Very walkable, including a new river walk connecting both ends of the village.

Flint Hill, population 209. Well maybe 212, now that we live here. A small village that's pretty much about food. Home to Griffin Tavern, Skyward Cafe and The Blue Door food is definitely the main attraction. At the edge of the village is Settle's (Flint Hill Market) if you need snacks or basic supplies, a selection of wine and craft beer plus, most importantly they now carry Richmond's famous Gelati Celesti.

The gateway to Skyline Drive, Canoe Capital of Virginia. Front Royal, our neighbor to the north has pretty much all of the major services you may require. An interesting history as no confirmed story on the town's name is available, also known as Helltown in its early days. Some of that rough around the edges character still discourages some visitors today. We'd say after living just outside of town, you're missing out. There's a developing dining scene with some very good restaurants. Homemade Ice Cream. A cute town center with a small park and gazebo. If you need to stock up on supplies, there is a CVS, a Big Lots, a Martin's(grocery store) and Rural King(don't miss visiting the chickens and bunnies). Also home to Fantasyland park which has a huge playground if you have younger children.

Getting Around

Cell Service At the house AT&T and Sprint work best. Verizon and T- Mobile have limited service. Within the county you'll find largely the same applies. Several areas have no service at all - past the schools heading west on 211 towards SNP. Car You really need your own vehicle, or with prior arrangement we can provide transportation at an additional cost. Taxi There are no taxis available in Rappahannock. Some cabs from Front Royal may come to the area, but the cost is likely prohibitive. Uber No Uber or Lyft, due to limited cell service.
