Sightseeing

This is great for children as they can touch and feel and experience Irish history and how people lived from Stone Age to the Vikings. They will be learning without knowing it! It is a lot of walking outdoors. Has a good restaurant and gift shop.

This is not a boring museum with only things to read. It has voices, holographic people debating topics, full-sized figures. Smaller children may be a little bored or even scared, but if at all interested in getting a feel for what it was like in the area at the time of the rebellion, the centre is good. It will be worthwhile even if only a little information is retained (what size the pikes were and how they were made) or if it raises questions later.

Free and Natural

It is 8 miles to the Cullentown Beach. There is the main beach with toilets, outdoor shower, water tap, individual fenced-off picnic tables, a handball alley and parking. Pay attention to the sign and do not swim to the left as a river joins there. If you don't go down the ramp to this area, there is another beach past the Shell Cottage, down a pot-holed road where the locals go. There are no facilities there. (mind the washed out bit of the road)

You don't have to go inside the Abbey to enjoy yourself here. Take a look at the Abbey and notice its cross shape. From the car park, can you see the faces up high on the building? The small round tower makes a nice photo. Have the rest of the family go inside and stick their heads out the window. The curved roof area at the back is where the monks stored their grain. You can still see (and smell) the wild garlic the monks planted in the woods. There are walks through the woods or stroll to the old church and graveyard. Be sure to take a look at the well and limekiln next to the bridge. The water is tidal up to the bridge. Across the bridge are the old stables and formal garden (fee)
