No one knows about this place. Seriously, no one. So I have no idea how long they'll be open. But while it's here, you'll have personal service. They make a cheap breakfast and a variety of good burgers for lunch. Easy walking distance. Sometimes there is live jazz.

It's a corner pizza shop that's pretty good. You can get a cheesesteak here. But it also has one of the best beer selections around without being incredibly fancy about it. Nothing is fancy about this place.

This is an indoor corner store that caters to the hipsters of west philly. You can get your quinoa and artisinal potato chips here. But they are also home to amazing tofu hoagies. They have a whole menu of bánh mì to order from, but the tofu is spectacularly yummy.

Unofficially named "Breakfast and Lunch" this is greasy diner food without having to go to south philly. A favorite with the police, so do not be alarmed (as I was) if you go by at 7am and see 5 cop cars around the intersection. They close by 3pm. On weekends there will be a wait to be seated.

Saturdays year round from 10am-2pm, Thursdays in the summers from 4-7pm. Fresh produce, meat, eggs, bread, and cheese (and sometimes chocolate, jam, and pottery) - grown locally. If shopping makes you hungry, there are usually a couple food trucks who stop by for the market.

It's hard to tell whether to categorize this as food or culture, but these four or five blocks of 9th Street are some of the liveliest in philly. There are cheesemongers, butchers, spice merchants, taco restaurants, and stores selling cheap housewares. And then the east side of the street is lined with vendors selling fresh produce. Near there are some amazing Italian bakeries, Mexican restaurants, and Vietnamese Cafes.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is a place to take a party where only some of the people are feeling adventurous about trying Ethiopian food. They make delicious food, but they are one of the only Ethiopian/Eritrean places (there are several in west philly) that will also make a burger. In good weather, they also have a gorgeous outdoor area in the back.

Everything Else

If you care about the Second Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence, this is the part of town for you. Cobblestone streets and horse and carriage tours. Mind that you enter at the appropriately signed entrances, because for some reason the National Park Service really worries about you jaywalking and stepping over the low fence.

The University of Pennsylvania ran some of the earliest excavations in Troy, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. So they have some really fancy historic artifacts. As far as repatriation? The only things this museum has done as far as I know relate to the collections of material relating to indigenous nations of the Americas. They have an open conservation lab where they work in front of the public for two half hour windows every day. Admission is $12. They have many events for children scheduled through the year.

It's a small museum near the huge, iconic Philadelphia Art Museum, so it often gets overlooked. But admission to the PMA includes the Rodin Museum, and I love his sculptures.

Shopping

I hardly ever buy anything here, but it's amazing to go in and see all of the local craftspeople's goods being sold here. If you have a need for jewelry made out of expired credit cards, this is the place.

Essentials

This is the closest grocery store, but it's not the cheap kind of co-op. It's the expensive organic kind of co-op. I go here for coffee, soy milk, vegan cheese, and urgent last minute kale needs. Oh, and fresh bread.
