There is a shop rite in Newark on Springfield and a Shoprite in Kearny just over the bridge but we like this one much better. We get all our groceries and weekly shopping done here. It’s less than 10 minutes away up 21 second exit on the right (Belleville/North Arlington Exit)

If you are mobile (either rented a car or drove to our home for your stay), you can drive to the Harrison Path Station instead of departing from Newark Penn Station (which is much busier and hard to find parking for). The Harrison Path Station has been completely rebuilt and renovated and is now very nice! Pro tip: find free parking underneath the bridges across the street from the Seabras shopping center plaza and walk the .5 miles to the Path station.

Getting Around the City

Ride sharing is a convenient way to peruse the city although it can be expensive. Newark’s classic taxi cab service can be an alternative. The bus lines are very accessible if you don’t mind waiting. The light rail at Broad St or Bloomfield Ave is a great option. Heading into the City take the PATH or NJ transit from Newark Penn Station into Manhatten. Driving into NYC is a tourists worst nightmare.

Driving in the City

NJ drivers can be pretty aggressive. Don’t be alarmed if drivers take quick left in front of you when the light turns green or if you find yourself driving directly at an oncoming car trying to get passed double parked cars on both sides of the street. Keep alert and make sure your parallel parking is good and you’ll be just fine.

Fast-Paced but Friendly

Newark is a hard working town. Some professionals in Ironbound commute to the city but many both live and work locally. Don’t be afraid to ask someone for help/advice if needed. Over 50% of the North Ward is of Latin origin so if you know Spanish and Portuguese you’ll be at an advantage.

Hot in Summer & Cold in Winter

Due to its location, it can be hot and humid in the summer but chillingly cold in the winter. Check local weather and make sure you have appropriate attire. You will do a fair amount of walking so make sure you have comfy shoes!

Brazilian Festival!

New Jersey is home to the largest percentage of Brazilians in the nation, and Newark houses a prodigious majority. Every year on Labor Day Weekend, Newark hosts the famous Brazilian festival, in the Ironbound district, known for the best Brazilian music, cuisine, and culture. Last year the festival was canceled due to covid so this year is sure to be memorable. Don’t miss out!
