Ridge upon ridge of forest straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. World renowned for its diversity of plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture, this is America's most visited national park. 1 hr drive from our place. Looking Glass Falls is one of the most popular and beautiful waterfalls in North Carolina. And it's perhaps the easiest to view (one of the few accessible roadside waterfalls, making it perfect for folks with mobility and walking challenges). The name "Looking Glass" comes from Looking Glass Rock, where water freezes on its sides in the winter and then glistens in the sunlight like a mirror or looking glass. Looking Glass Creek, which flows past the rock, is also named for its impressive natural structure. Its easy accessibility makes Looking Glass Falls a popular spot for travelers along U.S. 276, Forest Heritage Scenic Byway, near Brevard in the Pisgah National Forest. Enjoy nice views from the parking area along the road. Or take a short walk for a closer look. The waterfall is 60 feet tall.

The elk of Cataloochee Valley wander free and wild in the valley (no cages or fences), so it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of wildlife viewing. But with a little lesson on the elk and how to best enjoy their beauty, you’ll be all set for an incredible adventure. Cataloochee is a remote area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, so once you leave Highway 276 there is no food, gas, or other commercial services available. Another thing to note: there’s only one road in, so please practice caution and remember to share the road with your fellow wildlife enthusiasts. Wanna tip? Fill up your car, grab some snacks or picnic items, and make one last pit stop before heading into the valley.
