Vail pass allows you to get started at an already elevated level. Ride bikes down or hike from the summit or even drive if you have a 4 wheel drive. A dirt road will take you from the summit over to Red Cliff, a great day trip if you have the nerve. :-)

Cute and close by (20 minutes by car) this old mining town has charm, shops, restaurants, an historic saloon and the Eagle River goes right through town.
