The existence of Kaptol, the settlement on the east slope, was confirmed in 1094 when King Ladislaus founded the Zagreb diocese. The Cathedral was consecrated in 1217, but later in 1242 it was badly damaged during the Mongol invasion. After 1263 it was restored and rebuilt. In the 13th century two Gothic churches were built in Kaptol, St. Francis with the Franciscan monastery and St. Mary, which underwent considerable reconstruction works in the 17th and the 18th centuries. In Opatovina, small dwelling houses of former Kaptol inhabitants can still be seen, but at Dolac a number of little and narrow streets were torn down in 1926 when the today's market was built.

The city long ago merged from two medieval cities, Gradec and Kaptol, creating what is today’s upper old town. Places to see here : - the colorfully tiled rooftop of St. Mark’s church, which stands out amongst the standard orange tiles of nearly all the other rooftops in town, - stone Gate and Chapel - government buildings - Lotrščak tower - use funiculare to get to Gradec form Ilica street

A stroll down Strossmayer Promenade is important, not only for the view and perspective it provides, but also to allow you find out about one of the most important figures in Croatian history. Bishop of Djakovo, Slavonia, political party leader and founder of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, Strossmayer had a huge influence on events while Croatia was still a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. He used income from his episcopal estates to fund other important projects. His promenade was designed in the mid 19th century, named after him some years later.

Just around the corner from the central square is one of the most romantic places in Zagreb, Zrinjevac Park. Your first impression will be of a green and floral promenade – this is where art lovers flock in droves. There are few towns where streets and greenery live as closely intertwined as they do in Zagreb. Zrinjevac, named after the Croatian viceroy, Nikola Šubić Zrinski, is the first in the string of eight green spaces, perhaps even the most beautiful.

It is not a big street, but its content makes it give the impression of one of the most important streets in the city of Zagreb. With his name, Nikola Tesla has not only sealed the name of this street, but also the complete Croatian history, with his inventions and innovations that changed the world. On 7 July 2006, the statue of Nikola Tesla was placed at the corner of Masarykova and Preradovićeva street. The statue is the work of art by Ivan Meštrović and it was moved to this location from the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb.

If you hear the blast of cannon fire, fear not, it simply means it’s midday. According to one legend, a cannon shot from the Lotrščak tower soared over the river Sava and landed in the Turks’ encampment, right on a platter of chicken that was being carried to the Pasha for his lunch. The Pasha decided against attacking a city of fearsome sharpshooters so Zagreb escaped invasion. Since this ace shot was fired at noon, a cannon has been fired at that time from the same tower ever since. Sited in the Upper Town, the tower originally was part of the city’s defenses, and later served as a prison. Nowadays, it houses a gallery and an art shop, and the view from the top is well worth the climb.

This courageous warrior defended the continental part of Croatia from Hungarian attacks and for the first time united all Croatian lands into one country. Tomislav successfully sought papal recognition of his realm, and was crowned as king in the year 925. Despite dying mysteriously three years later, his status as founder of the Croatian state has never been in doubt. The railway arrived in Zagreb in 1862, connecting the cultural centres of Vienna and Budapest. Travellers coming out of the railway station are confronted with one of the most beautiful views in Zagreb, which takes in the statue of King Tomislav, the Art Pavilion, the cathedral’s spires and the green slopes of Mount Medvednica

Tkalčićeva Street is Zagreb main hub for cafes, restaurants and casual nightlife. Also known as Tkalča (Tkalcha), it features dozens of places where you will find something to your liking. Tkalčićeva is filled with life. Numerous boutiques, traditional shops, restaurants, cafes and outdoor events will fill your day. Once it was a stream that divided two oldest Zagreb settlements, Gradec and Kaptol. Because of contamination by all the shops, the stream was diverted. In the period 1899 to 1941, almost every house in Tkalčićeva street was a brothel. or this reason, Zagreb was the first city in Europe with the proper red light district.

The 13th-century St Mark’s Church is one of Zagreb’s most emblematic buildings. Its colourful tiled roof, constructed in 1880, has the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right. The Gothic portal, composed of 15 figures in shallow niches, was sculpted in the 14th century. The interior contains sculptures by Ivan Meštrović, though the church is open only at Mass times.
