Food Scene

The food is to die for. Cozy, romantic. A bit pricey! Special night out treat. I recommend the tasting menus: vegetarian or by-country.

VALUE! You'll walk in and swear I'm nuts to rave, given its sports-bar humbleness, but I swear, just try the seafood or pasta or, really, anything. Innovative chef, fresh fish. huge portions! LOVE IT!

Unless you're Lebanese or have travelled there, you probably have never enjoyed the country's food as much as you will if you dine here. It's all lovingly hand-cooked by people who really know how to make delicious Lebanese cuisine. It looks like a quickie sandwich shop, but it's so much more. If you're here on the weekend, go for brunch. The wait is nowhere near as heinous as at other places in the neighborhood, and the food will knock your socks off. Nice art on the walls, too!

The food is off the charts: SO GOOD! It's right there, kitty-corner from the Green Street subway station on the Orange Line, so it's just a 7 minute walk from where you'll be staying. The service matches the food quality: you will be treated with humor and kindness. Great spot for breakfast or brunch or grabbing a quick bite before you head downtown, or when you first arrive from your travels, or after you're tuckered out from touring Boston!

Probably my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. The food is incredibly imaginative: it skews French-American, though the chefs have eclectic selections that feature local, fresh and artisanal. Think seaweed tagliatelle: pasta of Maine coast kelp and dehydrated kale with cauliflower, a tomato-miso sauce and charred octopus. They offer tasting menus—available in omnivore, pescetarian and vegetarian formats—but everything is also a la carte. This isn't a cheap night out, mind you: this is the place to go for that special night out, that "it's our anniversary/your birthday" night out. You'll also be treated like royalty, with extraordinarily kind, accommodating service, which makes the delicious food go down all that much nicer.

This is a wonderful microbrewery, just a very quick walk from our house. Laid back, with a beer garden that often has food trucks pull in. Think kids, dogs, locals, and truly great beer. "Fine" is my favorite, though it's a sour beer that's only made in the summer.

This is an arboretum curated by Harvard University, comprising hundreds of acres of trees collected from all over the world for over a century by the university's botanists. The walking trails meander through the naturalistic landscape, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead: the country's first landscape architect, who also designed New York's Central Park and a chain of other parks that forms Boston's Emerald Necklace. It's a marvelous place to get your dose of nature, and only about a 10 minute walk from where you're staying. Highly, highly recommended, particularly my favorite trail, the Conifer Path, which will make you feel like you're in the Redwood forests of the US Pacific Northwest. Also, in the summer, check out the bonsai collection, a remarkable collection of trees, some of which have been cultivated over hundreds of years.

This is a must for visitors to Boston. It's a trail that brings you to some of the most important historical points in the American Revolution, which all started RIGHT HERE in Boston! Not only is it of historical interest—get a guide, I recommend, to truly take advantage of all the knowledge they impart—but it also winds through some wonderful Boston neighborhoods, including the Boston Common, historic graveyards, the North End, and far more. Bring good walking shoes, and finish the day by eating in the North End, where there are hundreds of marvelous Italian restaurants and bakeries. Our favorites: Giacomo's, Daily Catch or Pomodoros for dinner, Mike's Pastry for cannolis. If you're very ambitious, walk over the Charles River to Charlestown, where you can see a historic battleship. And justify that cannoli! It's a long walk! :-)
