Places to go

Welcome to a quick guide to the surrounding area.
Grasse is a picturesque medieval village that also holds the distinction of being the world’s perfume capital. While famous perfumeries like Fragonard offer free tours of their factories, the real reason to come here is to take in the never-ending fields of lavender that dominate the area’s hilly landscape. Grasse is conveniently located between Cannes and Nice, so a quick stop here is worth your while, if only to pick up a few bottles of perfume and stop to smell the lavendar.

Market on TUESDAYS/SATURDAYS. Lovely town, approximately 1hrs drive. If you go to the market it is worth stopping on your way home, just as you leave the motorway, at the Vista Palace for a drink with an amazing view of Monaco.

Bordered by France on three sides, the petite principality of Monaco is a bastion of glitz and glamour. While it’s typically known as a playground for the ultra rich, those short on cash can still enjoy themselves here—excursions to stately sights like the Prince’s Palace, Fort Antoine, and Monaco Cathedral are enjoyable and won’t break the bank. Make yourself green with envy by going to observe the luxurious yachts at the harbor, and then punctuate your trip with a spin at the Monte-Carlo casino, if you dare. La Condamine (Port), Exotic Gardens and the Palace up on the ‘Rock’ (also on the Rock is the Jacques Cousteau Aquarium). During the summer they have an International Firework Competition on the Cote d’Azur and Monaco Port hosts four dates, throughout the summer and is well worth a visit although can be very, very loud.

– Village, can be seen from the house, is an old fortress town and definitely should be visited. It has numerous restaurants from a sandwich to either the Chevre d’Or or Chateau Eza at 150Euros a head. The Chateau Eza has a beautiful terrace with views of the whole of Eze bord de Mer, great for a drink in the evening. There are 2 restaurants on the beach, both of which are good, neither of which are cheap. The Anjuna has a live band every Sunday lunch, you need to book a table.

St Jean is the little town and port on Cap Ferrat where you can mingle with the rich and famous. Villa Ephrussi was owed by the Rothchilds and is now open to the public with beautiful gardens and a summer events calendar. Villa Kerylos another house and gardens.

has one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. The old town and port are easily accessed by train where there are numerous little shops and restaurants. There is a small church completely restored and decorated by Jean Cocteau.

The town of Menton, perhaps the best-kept secret on the French Riviera, has all the beauty of the better-known coastal villages but a fraction of the crowds. Its half-dozen beaches are all but empty in the off-season, and boutique-filled alleyways are relatively free of bargain-hunting tourists. This slower pace means you can revel in town’s old world ambiance. Boasting over 300 days of sunshine a year, exceptional gardens, and tasty Italian cuisine due to its position on the Franco-Italian border, an afternoon spent here is a great complement to a Riviera trip. Pro tip: In February, the town goes all out with its Lemon Festival, a celebration of spring and a throwback to the town's past, when it survived principally on citrus production. Gravity-defying floats (made almost entirely of lemons and oranges) trundle through the streets in a spectacle rivaling some of the world's most famous parades.
