Ciénaga la Caimanera Canoe Day Tour
In Tolu/Coveñas, travelers can take this tour to a swamp called Ciénaga la Caimanera, it's a coastal inland lagoon of approximately 1,800 hectares in size, in which, you can appreciate four varieties of coastal mangrove trees: red, black, white and Zaragoza. Exactly! This little-known island chain feels like it's a million miles from anywhere. If you want to have a truly off-the-beaten-path Caribbean island getaway - this is the perfect way to do it. You'll feel like you discovered a piece of paradise that no one knew existed. Each island is different and super interesting.
The tour launch boat leaves from Tolú at 8:30 am and motors towards the first island of the tour called Boquerón, at the end of the Gulf of Morrosquillo, next it will steer you by Isla Palma after which you motor off to Santa Cruz del Islote.
Santa Cruz del Islote is unusual because it's the most densely populated island on earth. It is only ⅛ a kilometer squared (or just over 2 acres) but contains 1,200 people, 90 houses, 2 stores, a restaurant, and a school. Each house is touching the next, the whole island is concrete, and it looks like every square inch is utilized. There are little walkways and alleyways to walk in between houses, and sometimes you feel as if you are walking through someone’s home. The natives here are friendly and happy to sell you some paletas or (popsicles) from their home so you can cool off.
After visiting Santa Cruz del Islote for a while, the tour continues to Isla Múcura. Mucura is the most visited island for tourists. It has perfect white sand and still turquoise waters. The main swimming area is incredible with some of the calmest water you'll ever see. You can swim out very far and still be only waist-high in the water. There are also a couple of restaurants, hotels, and amenities here.
Be Prepared:
The islands are quite a way out into the sea. You should take the boats early to get there, as the waves get bigger later during the day. There are even days when it isn’t possible to make the trip because the waves get too rough. If you are making the trip from Santiago de Tolu, try to arrange the voyage asap so you'll have a better chance of calm day going early in the morning.
Also, if you are prone to sea-sickness make sure to take some Dramamine. It can be a bumpy ride!
Just be prepared and try to go with the flow.
Also, there aren't any ATMs on the islands, so be sure to bring sufficient cash with you. Cash is the only thing accepted at the islands!
You might also want to take any specialty foods or snacks with you. Food prospects are limited on the islands! Don't forget to bring some sunscreen and some insect repellent with you too. It will be difficult or nearly impossible to find any on the islands.
Plus you might want to bring a good book or magazine, a deck of cards, or anything to pass the time while you are swaying away in a hammock. And finally, a wifi connection is limited to almost nonexistent on these islands. It's a place to go to relax and disconnect. Enjoy!
Departure from Múcura leaves around: 2:30 to 3:00 pm to return to Tolu. And depending on the tide and winds your return usually will take about an hour to get back to Tolu.
