The Star of the Sea Church, also known as Kalapana “Painted Church”. Located near the end of Hwy 130 in Kalapana, this wooden church built in 1928 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has survived many earthquakes, tsunami threats, volcanic eruptions, and lava flows. From the outside, the church looks quite plain, but is known for the well-preserved, beautiful hand-painted murals and paintings that cover most of the walls and ceiling inside the church. You will be drawn in by the vibrant colors, exquisite details, and fascinating stories behind the artwork.

Just outside Pahoa and offers visitors a chance to experience a one-of-a-kind rock forest. Previously lush and green, lava flows encroached upon the once rain forest, surrounding trees and burning their insides. Moss covered, hollow stone skeletons are all that remain of the former tropical landscape. This unusual volcanic feature is the result of a lava flow that swept through this forested area and left behind lava molds of the tree trunks. *Open Daily 7:00am to 6:45pm *Viewing of an excellent example of a forest of lava trees along an 0.7 mile loop trail. *Entrance Fee: None *Trail Name: Lava Trees Loop Trail UPDATE: 9/30/20 - Lava Tree State Monument is OPEN for day and hiking use, subject to Covid-19 restrictions. Access gates will be CLOSED.
