The Monteith District is Albany's oldest historic district, originating in the 1860's. The original Monteith house, originally built by Thomas and Walter Monteith in 1849 is still present and now serves as Albany's Monteith House Museum. It even still houses some of the original furniture.
The entire Monteith district is full of stunning churches, some dating back as far as 1891, and is comprised of over 450 homes, churches and buildings constructed during the National Register's period of significance, from 1849 - 1945.
During the Summer Home Tour you can tour the interiors of some of the historic homes and churches. Visitors ride a trolley bus through Albany's historic districts (Monteith and Hackleman). Residents open up their homes and allow visitors to tour and get a glimpse of these special houses. There is also a Christmas tour (typically the second weekend of December) on which visitors can submerge themselves in an old-fashioned holiday celebration.
