Very local walks and some pubs

Sightseeing

Fabulous views from the top Short - for a short walk you can do an up and down from the Bulls Head in Bollington. Mid- For a longer walk continue along the ridge and either drop down to the right between the quarries, toward Endon hall and back along the mill workers paved paths. Long- Or continue further along the ridge all the way into Rainow - and if you drop to the left before the end you can make it to the Robin Hood pub. This makes it quite a long walk - but you can return at the base of the ridge past the waterfall .

A crevasse in the rock where the Lollards hid to avoid hanging. One of our favourite walks because it has everything - ridge views, forest, river, rocks to climb, almost gruesome history and …it’s hard to find. It’s thought to be the green chapel from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

From Wincle along the Dane valley up to hanging stone on the way to the roaches and ludds church. The Wincle brewery is here and does tastings . :-) And ‘The Ship at Wincle’ is a lovely pub with good food.

Lovely forest walk with views. National Trust car park. This area has been inhabited since the bronze age - with escarpment , caves and mines. Also rumoured to be the home of King Arthur and his sleeping Knights. Featured in the books by Alan Garner - the weird stone of Brisingamen. Pub/cafe next door - also the village of Alderley at the bottom of the hill with lots of very good restaurants.

This was our go to place in lockdown- its on the gritstone trail. Whilst everyone crowded into the peak district in covid - no one ever goes here. The views are amazing and its a great walk. Theres nothing at the top except an old repeater station built in the 1950's in case of nuclear war. Part of the 'Backbone' chain. Later called the BT tower. There is nothing else, not even a bench. We park near Sutton reservoir and walk up, joining the gritstone trail to walk down. Great place to be alone.

A radio telescope by Bernard Lovell built in the 50's using parts of decommissioned battleships. He fought for funding in a still rationed post war Britain- Listened in to Sputnik before the Russians could and it proved itself as the West’s then only early warning station for tracking Soviet ICBMs. The Bernard Quatermass of the 'Quatermass experiment' getting his name here and Dr Who filmed here! A UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Visitor centre, Cafe and walks around the arboretum - all the way to Pluto ( which is no longer a planet)
