Great local lore about how a community came together to find two young brothers. Though it's a sad story it has great human interest. It's an easy hike near Blue Knob State Park and a pretty drive from Elmo's.

A National historic sight with easy walking trail from the parking area to the tunnel. The ambitious can take on the Path of the Flood trail through the tunnel and into downtown Johnstown, but it's a difficult trail once you get through the tunnel. Take a flashlight so you can safely navigate the tunnel and admire the craftsmanship of the stonemasons. The walk from the parking area to the tunnel is easy and about 2 miles.

Think traveling is difficult today? Come find out the challenges of those who were traveling in the 1830s. Picnic area is available on the grounds and lots of interesting displays for the whole family are at the visitor's center. Summer there are often concerts in the amphitheater. Enjoying your day learning about canal and railroad travel? You're very close to Gallitzin and the still used today rail tunnel which was an engineering achievement when it was built. There's a nice park for the kids, a movie in the community building and a train watching space on the bridge that's an experience. I'm sure you're hungry by now and we recommend The Boxcar in Lily for recharging.

The details of the passenger stories are inspiring. This is a solemn place that captures the spirit of those individuals who took action. The local fire company which first responded is nearby and keeps their own memorial worth visiting.

Another national historic site which is still in use today. Worth a visit and admire the engineering it took to build and maintain. Gallitzin Tunnels are a short drive up the mountain from here and the local community keeps their own memorial including a short video also worth a visit if your interest in transportation is piqued. One of the tunnels is still in use and there is a schedule of trains at the municipal building. Nice place to visit with kids.

Charles M. Schwab was a steel magnate who influenced this region as head of Bethlehem Steel. This is his former summer home. Located in Loretto, PA the gardens are open to the public. Many pretty places to enjoy the landscaping, pray or just reflect on the beauty of nature. Loretto is the home of St. Francis University a Division I school in the NCAA's Northeast Conference. Immergrun Golf Course, commissioned by Schwab, is now part of the campus and is open to the pubic (check the website for more information). Lots to do in this little town!

Up for a bit of a drive, but a fun afternoon? Take 219N to Grampian. One traffic light is in the town and you'll make a left there to find Bilger's Rock. Pack a picnic and wear tennies so that you can fully enjoy the exposed sandstone features and trails at this fun site. After you can continue into the town of Clearfield to enjoy a burger at the famous Denny's Beer Barrel Pub - come hungry!

Need an afternoon adventure? Take 219S to connect w/ Rte 56 through Windber. Follow 56 'over the mountain' to the town of Reynoldsdale and enjoy learning about native wildlife in our region. Depending on the season, the hatchery is alive with thousands of trout bred at the hatchery. I found memory of visiting as a child to feed the fish and visit the aquarium. Driving back toward Windber there are two covered bridges (my preference is the one to the left of 56 by the sporting goods store). Just a fun place to get out and let the kids play on a summer day. The other you can still drive across. My recommendation is to head for The Windber Hotel for a late lunch/early dinner. Great pizza, a good selection of beers, and some novelties that the kids always enjoy checking out while waiting.

Love Marvel Comics, especially Spider-Man? Johnstown native, Steve Ditko created Spider Man and contributed to other Marvel Comic characters and shared his super hero with our region. Right outside Elmo's door is a trailhead for this historic path that memorializes the great disaster that befell the city of Johnstown in 1889. Amsite Rd. is part of the trail, walk to the end of the road and the trail goes down over the hill and leads into what was the bed of the dam. You're in the south abutment of the dam and part of the National Memorial Park and there are markers to identify points of interest. There's also a nice picnic area. Across Rt. 53 is the Stineman's trailhead and takes you into Bealtown/South Fork. It's about 1.5 miles. If you continue on, you'll need to walk along Railroad Street a short distance to the bridge into Fifficktown where you can pick up the trail into Mineral Point and The Staplebend Tunnel before heading into downtown Johnstown. The Saturday before Memorial Day, The Path of the Flood Historic Race is held to commemorate the flood and its impact on our region. You can choose the 14 mile, 8 mile or 5k events and will enjoy the trail's offerings along with the fun of the post run festivities in PNG Park.
