Rethymnon is one of the few Greek cities that has a nicely preserved old town. The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, the small Venetian harbour and narrow streets.
A beach front of more than 5km length adds another unique feature to this town.

The Venetian stronghold of Fortezza is built on top of a low hill above Rethymno Town, Crete. Some of the many sights to see inside the Fortezza are the Ibraham Han Mosque, the Bastion of Santa Maria and the church of Agios Theodoros Trichinas. This orthodox chapel was built in 1899 by the Russian Governor of Rethymnon. The 20th-century Theatre of Erofili is also inside the Fortezza and holds many cultural events every summer. Every year Rethymno's beach is awarded with a blue flag, so the water is clean, it is safe (always take consideration of the wind flags, red flag prohibits swimming), so get a sunbed and enjoy the sea along with snacks and refreshments.

The arch is a meeting point for local people and it is actually an entry point (one of the many) of the old town where you can find shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.
For those that have a more romantic approach to life and with a vivid imagination, you may generate a medieval feeling while going through the gates.

The old lighthouse, dates back to 1830, at the old venecian harbor is not in use anymore, but it certainly reminds you a well gone era. Certainly a must to take a walk near the harbor and try some food and drinks at the nearby restaurants and cafes.

Rethymno is a small town which makes it ideal for sightseeing on foot. However, there are a few places that require the use of a car or a bus but that depends on the visitor and to what extent someone is eager to explore a new place.
