Food Scene

Northwest food prepared by well known Seattle chef Brian Clevenger, and an especially great happy hour from 5-6. But get there early as happy hour is only at the bar and there are few seats.

Great coffee and pastries. I don't get the cupcake fascination but apparently most everyone else does- I see a lot of cupcakes leaving the premises.

Good Thai food for take out or seating indoors. Probably the most moderately priced dinner of the various restaurants in the hood.

American food with the expected food choices, priced appropriately. Monday nights features great local music, so go early enough to get a seat.

Grab a great slice of quiche for a quick breakfast, and a great cup of coffee to go with it. Very reasonably priced too.

One of my favorite places for a very tasty dinner and a creative cocktail. Try the beef in bettel leaves, and the charred kale is the best ever.

Parks & Nature

Many meandering low key/low elevation hiking trails though lovely woods and an occasional meadow. No great views, but easy access as it's so close to Seattle, you don't need a parking pass, and there are relatively few visitors to this awesome area. Ask me about which parking lot to choose, but any combination of trails provides a refreshing refill of nature.

Even closer than Cougar Mountain is Seward Park. Walk the outer rim of the park via bike path or meander into the woods and pick any trail. Giant trees, easy walks no matter what you choose, and great birding.

More than a park as it is a wildlife habitat right in the city. Many species of birds visit this area as it offers meadow, woods, ponds and beach. If you are looking for low energy output but want to be out in nature but don't want to drive out of the city, this is a perfect place for you. You will say hello to osprey, bald eagles, warblers, woodpeckers, finches, grebes, and a variety of ducks and innumerable other winged visitors to the area.

Essentials

Central Market is close by and an easy stop on the way back from downtown or Capital Hill. Offers healthy food- organic produce and products screened for their ingredients so you can be sure to find non-GMO and pesticide free options. This is my go-to for grocery shopping.

Sightseeing

A half mile walk down the hill from our location is a place I've passed many times walking my dog, and always someone is there paying tribute to this Seattle musician. The benches are carved and painted with offerings of thanks to Kurt for his impact on their lives.

The conservatory is wonderfully full of oxygen from all the plants thriving inside, and a great place to go on a rainy day to get warm and be around the fragrances and delights of growing green things. But just to the south is one of the best views in Seattle, overlooking the space needle and the Sound and Olympic mountains beyond.
