Parks & Nature

Coloradoans love their mountains! Everything we do here either includes or revolves around them. For your consideration, some of my favorite natural haunts where you can commune with rocks, trees and spy wildlife. These destinations are either close by or a half or full day adventure from Mountainlicious Cabin.
Beautiful scenery on a historic ranch with a network of trails for hiking, biking, fly fishing and equestrian riding fifteen minutes from the cabin. Hike up to gorgeous Elk Creek Falls which has been a hiking destination in Colorado for a hundred years. Marmot Days in June:). $7 park entrance fee. Thank you to the Stauntons for their generous donation for all Coloradoans to enjoy.

Pine Valley ranch is a daily ritual for me. Short hikes, fishing (with license) or take a quick jaunt around the lake. Great place for stocked trout fishing (with license) at the lake or try fly fishing on the North Fork of the South Platte River that runs through the park. Take a picnic lunch and sit by the river on a picnic table. Try the 3 mile loop hike for a spectacular view of the lake and valley. Free

There are only a few places on Earth you can stand in an alpine tundra. Lucky for us, Colorado is one of those places. Adventurous? Conquer a class three 14teener. At the top of Guanella Pass is the trailhead for Mt. Bierstadt. Not a billy goat? Then enjoy the world above tree line and take the short loop hike and discover alpine tundra flora. You can make a day of it and continue on down the road and come into Georgetown: a picturesque Victorian mining town where silver was king. Beautiful scenery, good aspen viewing and you might even see a moose!

About the fourth week of September the whole mountain is ablaze in Colorado gold; aspen gold that is. Park and hike one of the trails among one of the world's largest single organism the humble Aspen tree. After that, drop on over the pass into South Park. One of Colorado's immense high mountain plains. Try Jefferson, Co. for a burger at the Hungry Moose Caboose. There is also a great little museum/town to tour with great Victorian buildings from all over the South Park area of Colorado.

Drive up the highest paved road in North America! An easy hike to the tippy top and take your photo of the USGS marker to prove you conquered a 14'er while taking in breath taking views of the high country. You are almost guaranteed to see mountain goats and marmots. You will see Bristle Cone Pine trees which are 1500 years old. Drive back down and spend some time at the Mt. Evans Lodge Trading Post and grab a souvenir and a bowl of chili for lunch. The summit opens sometime in May or June and closes in early September so check before you go. $10 (I like to make this a day trip and finish off the excursion in Idaho Springs at one of the great restaurants in town before returning to the cabin.)

Tiny Colorado mountain communities foster some of the most local legendary hole in the wall and roadhouse spots to hang out in and enjoy. Whether it's an old favorite with a local famous/infamous history or a new kid on the block still building their rep; these are must see, must experience spots.
