Popular with locals, serves the best pastizzi (traditional pastry filled with cheese or peas) on the island. Also try the delicious ftira (a flatter pastry base with tomato, olives and herbs), and qassatet (ricotta pies). You'll have to be quick though as many are gone by mid-morning! Closes for the afternoon then reopens as a bar at night.

Restaurant situated right next to the water in Marsalforn. Great selection of fresh fish as well as pasta, salads and meat dishes. Tables are so close to the waters edge you feel like you are floating on a raft. Kids can explore rock pools and salt pans in a safe environment near by.

A small bar on the corner of a beautiful square, Zeppi's is the go-to for much of the expat community in Gozo as well as the local crowd. Run by lovely, effervescent owner, Sonia, it often hosts live music events and is open late into the night. Try the local Maltese ale "Hopleaf" or refreshing golden lager "Cisk" (pronounced Chisk). Also worth trying is "Bajtra", a sweet liqueur made from the prickly pears you see growing all over the island.

Sightseeing

Not to be missed are the breath-taking views of the entire island from the battlements. Built at a perfect strategic vantage point, the Citadel has been at the centre of activity on the island since possibly Neolithic times, and was certainly fortified during the Bronze Age around 1500 BC. It was later developed by the Phoenicians and in Roman times, and again by the Knights of St John between 1599 and 1603. During Gozo’s darkest period, when for two centuries, marauding Turks and Berber corsairs pillaged and enslaved local people, the ENTIRE population of Gozo was required by law until 1637 to spend the night within the Citadel for their own safety!

Fantastic baroque church built between 1672 and 1678. The church houses two works of art by the famous painter Mattia Preti. These are the main altar piece representing St George with the dragon and the other in a side chapel representing the Holy Souls.

Ġgantija (meaning Giant's Tower) is a megalithic temple complex and older than the pyramids of Egypt. Their makers erected the two Ġgantija temples during the Neolithic (c. 3600–2500 BCE), which makes these temples more than 5500 years old and the world's second oldest existing manmade religious structures. Together with other similar structures, these have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Megalithic Temples of Malta.
