Drinks & Nightlife

When people hear Thong Lor nightlife, they think party, party, and big bills. While one doesn't have to break the bank here, Thong Lor is some of Bangkok's more exclusive real estate, and the vibe here in most bars and clubs is upscale, urban, and hip. Famed designer/creator Ashley Sutton has three top nightlife venues here, the bizarre Iron Fairies, the Wild West fish and chips saloon Fat Gutz, and the eco electronic Clouds. If these theme cocktail bars are appealing, you may want to check out the guru of the Bangkok drink, as well as one of the world's great cocktail connoisseur's, Joseph Boroski, at his hidden hole in the wall J Boroski Mixology. For something a bit more collegiate, with some great drinks to boot, try the unpretentious Shades of Retro or the happening music, dance, and drink venue, Badmotel. Thong Lor also appeals to the all night party crowd, and on Soi 10, there are plenty of clubs where one can dance to the electronic beat along with live Thai bands until the wee hours. Funky Villa, along with Myst, are the pick of the litter. Finally, don't forget to take it all in from way above with a drink at the sky high Octave before heading home. 6 Best Clubs in Thonglor 1. Beam Bangkok Beam is a serious dance club, which has been the saviour of many dance music fans who have been calling for a more mature clubbing experience than the EDM style that is found in most Bangkok clubs. Beam Bangkok is really more on par with Halo in New York and Fabric in London than anything else in Thailand’s capital and a must for fans of house and techno music. Downstairs there is a hip hop room, which has a great atmosphere, while the upstairs main room is dark, smokey and literally shakes thanks to speakers under the dancefloor and international DJs flown in weekly, from as far afield as Berlin and Tokyo. 2. Demo (and Funky villa) This two-in-one club presents two very different concepts: Funky Villa generally has indie bands playing on the main stage, while the adjacent Demo club room is all about the heavy bass, techno, house and EDM, thus drawing in a slightly more international crowd. We chose Demo every time as the bands over at Funky can get a bit tedious; singing along in Thai is not our forte. The good thing is that you can swap rooms as and when you please. There is also a third smaller bar that’s all about the hip hop. Foreigners have to pay 500 baht to get in on the weekend, but you do get two drinks tokens which amounts to 500 baht anyway. Ask the taxi for ‘Arena 10’ and you’ll find the huge club complex at the back. 3. DND (Do Not Disturb) Only opened in 2015, DND has an eye-catching ‘retro motel’ theme, with old TVs and suitcases stacked up on the walls, a motel bed curiously sitting on the stage, and a smoking room designed like an old barber shop. When DND gets packed on the weekend, you can’t actually see most of the cool décor though. For music, Thai bands play until midnight, and after that the DJ takes to the stage, which is normally a bit of a relief. It’s free entry and free ice/mixers all night when you buy a bottle of whiskey or vodka (which are slightly more expensive than other clubs). 4 Nanglen and Escobar Nanglen is a bit of a Thonglor institution, having opened over 10 years ago and still going strong today. The one large room fills up quickly, and if your table is far away from the toilet, navigating the crowds can take forever. Adjacent to Nanglen is Escobar, a more tourist-friendly option with a proper dance floor, live DJ (mostly hip-hop, house, pop and EDM). It’s also not as difficult to find a table here, or at least some kind of surface to rest your drink. Both of these Thonglor clubs are free to enter. 5 Safe House Safe House is always a safe bet if you’re arriving late and all the other clubs in Thonglor are either full or about to close. Despite opening most nights at 22:00, this definitely falls into the ‘after-hours’ category of club, with it only starting to fill up after midnight (unless there is a popular DJ playing) and finishing around 04:00, which is much later than other nearby clubs. Predictably, music is mainstream EDM and the crowd is young locals who have no reason to wake up early the next morning. Entry price depends on the night. 6 MUSE Club MUSE is definitely one of the more upscale Thonglor clubs, welcoming an affluent Thai crowd as well as sporting a smart rooftop chillout zone (take the elevator up to the third floor, it’s called ‘Roof Hideaway’). It’s downstairs, however, where the fun takes place, with the spacious room full with standing tables and a central stage at the front. Music policy here leans towards Thai indie bands and pop singers, although between live sets the DJ keeps the crowd moving with some bass-heavy dance music. It’s very Thai, quite upscale, but good if you’re looking for somewhere a little less claustrophobic than some of the other clubs in Thonglor.
