Take a picnic to the grounds. Beautiful walking/running trails, too. There is an entry fee to the inside of the grounds but there are also free trails to walk outside of the fee area.

Malakoff Diggins-fantastic place to take a hike and a picnic.
It's about a 31 mile drive...but well worth it. There's a little "ghost town" there at the park. There is a day use fee for parking, but it's around $5
