Sightseeing

Some of my favorite things to do and see in Penticton and Area.
View the icon White Penticton sign on the mountain up close and personal. The lower view point is an easy 2 minute walk from the parking area. See the Okanagan valley spread before you in all of it's glory. For the more adventurous, it's well worth the steep but short walk to the top view point for stunning 360 degree view of the valley, and the HUGE white Penticton letters on the mountainside below/

This wonderful gift shop and ice creamery is a must visit. They have a wonderful selection of work by local artisans, including pottery, fruit jams, jellies, and syrops, locally roasted coffee, knit items. Enjoy your ice cream (trust me, a single is PLENTY big enough!) while taking in the sights and smells of rural, agricultural Summerland. Listen carefully and you may hear the whistle of the summerland steam train, who stops just down the road at the iconic trestle. Or if you are feeling like you want to earn those creamy calories, why not plan to ride from Penticton's West Bench, along the West KVR. Your ride will afford you stunning, panoramic views from high above highway 97. Keep an eye out for the wild horse herds, who frequent the hills around this trail. You're journey will end at the iconic train trestle bridge, which is just down the road from Summerland Sweets.

This is where the legend started! Take a scenic 25 minute drive along windy East Side Road to OK falls. This little shop by the creek has a wonderful assortment of gifts and treats, not to mention a HUGE selection of ice cream, with some options being unique flavors made right on premises. Plenty of dairy free options too!

Parks & Nature

Access this walking and biking trail at the foot of Vancouver Pl, a left hand turn at the Pedestrian controlled crosswalk just up Vancouver Hill from the Bench Market. This wide, groomed trail offers stunning views of okanagan lake, Summerland, Penticton and the Naramata Wine country. Forned from the former KVR rail line, it is at a gentle grade and offers comfortable walking and biking all the way to and through Naramata. Take your camera and lots of water. For the more enthusiastic cyclists, you can follow this trail all the way to the historic tunnel with stunning views encompassing the whole valley: skaha Lake to Peachland. The trail carries on clear through to Kelowna.

Arts & Culture

Locataed at the foot of the scenic Penticton Creek walking path, this lovely japanese garden features a large pond filled with huge Koi and surrounded by traditional Japanses plantings. Enjoy the peace from the large floating deck in the middle of the pond- perhaps take your lunch and enjoy the peace, listening to the gurgling fountain and the gently lapping waves beyond as Penticton Creek spills into Okanagan Lake. If you've had enoug of outdoors, take a tour through the artgallery and pick up a souvenir made by local artisans at the gift shop.

Essentials

groceries, bits and pieces that you forgot, DvD rentals etc
Just a few minutes up Government St, this smaller hometown grocery store is well known for it's excellent customer service and smaller portions available in the meat department, perfect for singles, couples and vacationers. The bakery offers a wide variety of home cooked meals and take away gourmet sandwiches. The Produce department carries the most local fruits and vegetables of any grocery store. I love this store for it's small size- I can quickly be in and out in less than 20 minutes with everything I need.

Need some noodles and a baking pan, plus some beach toys for the kids? This is the store. You can park in the pay parking lot accessed from Backstreet Boulevard (BUT don't pay, just click past the pay option, enter your plate and getthe ticket, the first hour is FREE) . Once parked, take the pedestrian tunnel through to main st and turn right.

This store RENTs DVDS! They have a huge selection of movies and TV series: in addition to the usual 'block busters', they have BBC, foreign, documentary... you name it. They also have their name sake- a HUGE selection of used books. The inner store is twice the size of the apparent store front.

Entertainment & Activities

Offering the only indoor climbing wall in Penticton, this company offers many classes for both adults, children and families, in both rock climbing indoors and outdoors at the famous Skaha Bluffs, Bike tours and Kayaking activities. My personal favorite is the Kayak and Naramata winery tour, where you Kayak along the beautiful east side of Okanagan lake to lovely 3 mile beach in Naramata, where you are picked up, the boats are loaded and you are driven back through stunning Naramata vineyards, stopping at three local wineries for tastings.

Kids of all ages (even big kids like Dad or Mom) will enjoy testing their balance, agility and strength as they wobble around on this huge inflatable water playground. A wristband provides you with all day fun, coming and going as you like, or show up in the later afternoon, after 5 to test it out at a reduced rate until closing.
