. I recommend visiting the extraordinary archaeological site and the museum crypts, the site is located under the large church of Santa Maria Dell'assunta (visible from the front) and is open every day, from 10 am to 4 pm. The visit will take place through tours guided by archaeologists lasting 30 minutes which will start on a regular basis , every half an hour. The last will be at 15:30. Tickets, costing € 15 per person, can be purchased on our website www.marpositano.it/biglietteria or directly at the ticket office (near the Church of Santa Maria Assunta). In both cases, payments can only be made by credit card or debit card. Remember that inside the museum the temperature is around 15-17 °, so we recommend suitable clothing. Best regards,

The Our Lady of the Assumption Church overlooks the sea and its dome, which we see on postcards and photographs, dominates Positano center. The typical colors of majolica of the Amalfi Coast - the green of lush vegetation, the blue of the sea and the yellow of the sun - make its dome shine. Inside, the main altar is decorated with an icon of the Black Madonna of Byzantine style, dating back to the 12th century. Popular tradition says that the painting was on board a sailing ship from eastern regions and that it remain blocked off Positano due to a strong calm see. As the sailors threw most of the cargo overboard, they heard a voice whisper "Posa, posa!" (Posa = Put down!). The captain interpreted those words as a manifestation of the Virgin's will to remain in that place, so he ordered to direct the bow towards land and the ship prodigiously began to move again. On reaching the shore, sailors handed over the effigy of the Virgin and Child to the inhabitants of Positano, who welcomed her joyful and built a temple in her honor near the beach. The name "Positano" would derive from that whisper "Posa".
