They’re one of the oldest etching and fine art printing presses this side of the Mississippi, run by the amazing Kathan Brown. She invites artists in to produce a specific original print edition with their technicians, and then they’ll show that print in their gallery. They really foster total experimentation in the traditional medium of printmaking. Kathan’s husband, Tom Marioni is also a curator, artist, and one of the early members of the Conceptual Art Movement in California. He was also the founder of MOCA (Museum of Conceptual Art, 1970-84), one of the first alternative art spaces on the West Coast. Downstairs, in the same building is 871 Fine Arts, a little bookstore with some of the best art books out there—really hard to find stuff. Also make sure to check out John Berggruen Gallery and Gagosian Gallery on the same block.
