The Luggage Store

This two-story space on the second and third floor of a standalone building has been around for about 18 years and is one of the city’s oldest alternative spaces that is still operating. They usually show really young artists when no one else will give them a chance. It’s free, but they don’t really have a specific schedule, so definitely check that they’re open before you make your way over. Next-door is SF Camerawork, a great photography based non-profit with rotating exhibitions and more normal open hours. Down the street is another art non-profit called Root Division, which also has rotating exhibitions.
