Storm King Mountain "Trail Head" is less than a 10 minute walk or 1 min drive from The Cottage. The hike offers a variety of scenic views of the Hudson River, Bannerman Island, Breakneck Mountain, Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, and the old New York Central Railroad, now CSX . Plan for 2.5 hour (rt) moderate hike with steep and rocky sections. In 1962 the citizens of Cornwall on the Hudson rallied against Con Ed and the Federal Power Commision to prevent the destruction of Storm King by building the largest hydro-electric power plant which would supply power to NYC. It resulted in the 1st court ordered decision to preserve the nation's natural beauty and historic sites.

When it was built it was the most expensive road ever made in the US. When you drive it you will see why. The US military insisted a road between West Point and the town of Cornwall was a necessity. At great expense the road was literally blasted out of the side of the mountain. Great scenic view. SECRET CHARM OF THE HUDSON VALLEY.
