If you're keen skiers, mountain bikers or walkers, Nevis Range is the place for you. The Gondola runs year-round but check before showing up as poor weather will shut it down without much warning. There is a cafe and bike hire shop at the base.

Urquhurt Castle, the world famous monster sighting location is only 25 minutes from Fort Augustus. The visitor centre run by Historic Scotland is excellent. This is well worth a visit. Close by is the picturesque village of Drumnadrochit where there are plenty of cafes and restaurants for a bite to eat.

An hour and 40 minutes from Fort Augustus is the misty Isle of Skye. This is a well worth a day trip. On the way to Skye you'll pass the world famous movie location of Eilean Donan Castle.

You can catch the Harry Potter Steam Train to Mallaig from Fort William train station. Best to book in advance as it's very popular and can be hard to get tickets last minute.

The Caledonian Canal stretches from Fort William to Inverness. It was built by Thomas Telford. The lock gates cut through the centre of Fort Augustus providing a stunning backdrop for photographs.

A great way to see Loch Ness is by boat. Cruise Loch Ness offer a beautiful trip out into Loch Ness along with some historical commentary.

Fort George is an operational barracks and is home to the Black Watch Regiment. It is the only remaining intact barracks built by General Wade to calm the restless Jacobites. The other two being Fort William and Fort George. Well worth a visit.

This battlefield is where the final confrontation between the English and Bonnie Prince Charles and his Jacobites took place. It didn’t end well for the Jacobites so Prince Charlie took off for Italy via a short visit to Skye with help of Flora MacDonald.

A nice little morning or afternoon out. Foyers is about 20 minutes from Fort Augustus. There is a great cafe serving lovely sandwiches and homemade soup.
