Why not explore the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain? Fort George boasts a fascinating insight into the 18th century military life with garrison buildings, artillery defences, cannons, and an incredible collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches.

Astonishing active garrison and historic military museum. Owned by Historic Environment Scotland. Huge! Includes The Highlanders regimental museum. Keep a close eye on small children - some sheer drops. Good dolphin-spotting.

Fort George is an operational barracks and is home to the Black Watch Regiment. It is the only remaining intact barracks built by General Wade to calm the restless Jacobites. The other two being Fort William and Fort George. Well worth a visit.

The imposing fort was designed by Lieutenant-General William Skinner and built by the Adam family of architects. Fort George took 22 years to complete, by which time the Jacobite threat had subsided. But it has served the British Army for the almost 250 years since.
