Don't let the exterior put you off, this is a banging local Chinese take away. Quick walk to collect is almost always quicker than waiting for delivery.

One of our all-time-favourite local pubs (indepndent) and with the cutest little courtyard. Dog friendly. Great food. Locals' haunt. Look out for mid-week bargain-priced hot lunches. NB: Despite the name, it doesn't have a river view, but it's just round corner from Magdeline Bridge.

Sensational gelato in fancy flavours. There is another Jack's Gelato beside The Eagle (famous DNA pub) in Cambridge, but this newer outpost gets smaller queues.

Very cute and tiny indie coffee shop with a fantastic flat white. Expect to queue out the door - but it's worth it. The sarnies have always been a dissapointment, so grab a takeaway coffee and mooch.

Very wide array of ales and more, Pint Shop is a little pricey but good for a snack and drink in the bar downstairs, or try to reserve a table upsstairs for formal dining.

Head into the Varsity Hotel, past reception and to the lift. Head up, up and away...to the ROOF TERRACE. Phenomenal views and the best place to be on a sunny day (though no shade so need sunscreen or, when breezy, a warm layer). Drinks are expensive, so grab one for the view before heading down to the (cheaper) brasserie called SIX, the floor below. The fare is pretty standard but still nice views.

Fine Dining at it's very best, with stellar service and in relaxed atmosphere. Set in a Cambridge townhouse, if you manage to reserve a table (often months in advance) you're in for a treat. They do sometimes have late cancellations, so worth calling to see if you can nab a place for lunch or, our favourite, the evening tasting menu.
