A five minute walk from our house, this place has a great selection of local beers, awesome outdoor seating, space for kids to run around and hang out, and a daily food truck. Friday's are pizza truck days!

Bess's favorite coffee shop in Seattle. No seating due to COVID, but great coffee (and selections of beans). Grab a coffee and walk to SeaWolf for pastry or walk to GasWorks Park on a beautiful day.

Fabulous, slightly classy, pizza place with really great little bar, Essex, next door. In an out-of-the way location near Ballard.

Our go-to place for a celebration dinner. Need reservations, at least a week in advance. Amazing homemade pasta. In fact, everything we’ve ever had here has been delicious.

A fabulous, black-owned restaurant in the Central District (the "CD"). The CD was redlined but has been gentrifying, so supporting this restaurant is central to Seattle. Make reservations weeks ahead, or show up right when the restaurant opens on a weekday to get a table.

One of MANY breweries in this area of Ballard, but one of the best, we think. No food, but food trucks outside (or you can order food and bring it in). Great COVID-friendly outdoor space that is kid friendly.

A very unassuming exterior hides a wonderful and stalwart sushi place in the International District. If you like sushi, get a reservation and come here!

About a 20-30 minute walk downhill (and then quite uphill back home) or 5-10 minute drive, this park is beautiful and right on the Puget Sound. It has a beach, great playground, green space, and lovely forested trails to walk on. The view of the Olympics is beautiful when it's clear.

Great bookstore in Capitol Hill. Capitol Hill itself is just uphill (away from the waterfront) from downtown and an interesting place to explore -- has some great bars and stores, etc. Moses and I often just go and walk around Elliot Bay for an hour or so. They also have a nice coffee shop inside the store.

The “Burke” goes from Ballard for 27 miles to Bothell, on the eastside of Lake Washington. It’s a great way to see a different part of the city, and you can ride it to lots of different interesting parts of North Seattle.

One of the best museums in the city for adults and anyone over ten years old. Amazing stories told of the history of Asian-American immigration to Seattle (and the Pacific NW), plus great rotating exhibits.

Take a ferry!

A great and relatively cheap activity, particularly if you don't have a car (cheaper that way), and it's nice out. The ferry to take without a car is the Bainbridge line (which leaves from downtown Seattle). You can walk to some great bakeries, coffee shops, and restaurants in Winslow from the ferry.

Kayak around Lake Union

Rent kayaks or canoes from Ague Verde Paddle Club, located near the University of Washington. Paddle around Lake Union and then have great margaritas on Agua Verde deck.

Sunday Ballard Farmer's Market

The largest weekly farmer's market in Seattle is in Ballard and it's a wonderful way to pass a couple of hours on Sunday. Great vegetables, fruits, cheese, flowers, plus delicious food stalls for grabbing food to eat when you are there.
