Famous for it's sandy beach and the popular historical Dreamland amusement park, Margate is worth a day trip if you have never been before. You can drive there within 30 minutes, bus (via Stagecoach) or catch a train directly from Herne Bay train station.

Try and book your taxi ahead where possible as they get quite busy. Here are some combined recommendations of places we go to, but it’s just a snippet of what Margate has to offer so do explore! It's full of hidden gems. Shopping Old Town is where it’s at. A plethora of vintage clothes and furniture shops, and contemporary art galleries. Albion stores Werkhause and Brewer and Dawson are many favourites clothes stores. You can also sit in the square with a coffee or cocktail and people watch. When in Margate don’t forget to bring your cozzie and jump into the tidal pool at the Walpool bay at low tide. It is my ‘favourite place’ You will never regret taking the plunge. It’s healing and wellbeing powers are legendary to all who regularly swim in it all year round Download the tide app as the Pool is perfect at low tide or 2 hours either side. Also go to the sauna. Yes on the beach infront. Look up Haeckels on Facebook. And treat yourself to a visit to their emporium. Whether to buy products made from local seaweed, or pamper yourself (you’ll need to book). Margate Museum Quirky local history museum in Old Town. At £2 entry it’s definitely worth a visit. And you’re in for a treat if museum grandee Ian is around and you get a personal tour! The Margate Caves Just reopened and well worth a Visit The Shell Grotto Discovered in 1835, no-one knows who built it or why, but it’s an underground passageway with over 4 million shells decorating 70ft of tunnel walls. It’s pretty impressive! Bugsys Bowling Is a great place wet weather option to take the kids. As with The Lost Planet Is a great Indoor crazy golf for those rainy days when entertaining kids. Shopping Albion stores Fort road Beautiful clothes handpicked by the friendly owners. All independent designers. Stocks men’s and woman’s clothes and shoes Werkhaus High street. Mostly woman’s vintage and new utility wear. And one off pieces Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Brewer and Dawson Old town Vintage mix of men’s and woman’s clothes Margate superstore Vintage unisex utility wear and sports wear at great prices Haeckels Beautiful shop selling independent skin care products using Margate seaweed They also have beauty treatments using all their wonderful products. Places to eat and drink Olbys Soul Cafe, old town. Never had a Sunday roast like it. Caribbean twist, very generous portions and under £15. Must book. The Rose in June Pub Trinity Square Cozy friendly pub with roaring fire in winter. Independent Pop up restaurant Barletta Margate serving delicious food. Deke and his friendly team also making great cocktails and the best Bloody Mary. The George and heart Kings street MARGATE A cool eclectic pub with cosy nooks and big sharing tables. Cool music and great food. Very friendly fun owners and staff. Bar nothing Where everything good and fun happens before and after midnight. Where margates community come to unwind. It's opposite the Lido orange light. No name, just crazy coloured front. Faith In strangers My new favourite. An Audio bar with quality DJ's and great cocktails. Beautiful space with sea views and sunsets. In an upmarket setting. The Wastland Bar at The Albion Rooms The Libertines’ owned music bar & venue where the good times roll Indie-style. Try the Gunga gin @thealbionroomsmargate The Tap room Prices Avenue Great local quirky bar Like sitting in your front room but In a bar. You will almost definitely end up chatting to a new random Person. There is no place like it. Angelas Restaurant Just off the sea front . Beautiful fresh caught fish of the day and completely sustainable. Booking a must Dory’s fish bar (Angela’s sister Restaurant) Cold fish counter and beautiful wine. No booking, just walk ins. You can also buy take away pic nic hampers, excellent treat. Barletta on the roof With brilliant food, service and vibe and sunset In a relaxed cool atmosphere Dalby Cafe Traditional cafe (greasy spoon) serving ‘the best breakfast in Kent’. Also open Sunday, 7am - 2pm. Roost on Ethelbert Terrace. Diner style food - great burgers, hotdogs, calamari etc. Their rosemary fries with aioli dip is delicious! Very child friendly Hanvert & Found and Angela’s - in Old Town. Delicious sustainable seafood and seasonal veg. Bottego Caruso Old Town again. Incredible Italian food, if you can get a table! They only open a couple of days a week so I’d recommend booking very far ahead. New street Bistro New street MARGATE Serving tasty seasonal food great wines from Kent and locally brewed beers. Book in advance as a cosy small restaurant, with garden setting as well as inside. Peter’s fish and chip shop In Old Town. Traditional seaside chippy. Seating outside, or you can cross over the road and enjoy it on the beach. Modern Provider Bakery The Centre Sourdough croissants tarts cakes sausage and vegetarian rolls coffee dairy supplies Super friendly bakery all made on site by Ben The Old Kent Market Many different units selling amazing street food. GB Pizza Lovely pizza watching the sunsets Sargasso On the Margate Arm Great location. Vegetarian option The Kitchen, 3 Cliff Terrace, is a community cafe using surplus fresh food from within Thanet. They operate on a “pay is you feel” basis to help the community who need support. 5 min walk east is Walpole Bay hotel Stepping back into an elegant hotel to the ambience of a bygone era. Go to the third floor to the Napiery... There's nothing like it. Book high tea on the flower covered terrace Turner Contemporary cafe Barletta have a pop up cafe If you’re looking for a great coffee Mar Mar or Skinny Dip They both serve fresh wood roasted coffee, mar mar in an oasis of wonderful plants, which you can also buy. They both also serve lovely cake and croissants if you fancy a sweet treat. Forts cafe Eastern Esplanade Forts has been a cafe in the 1940's, but most recently it has been taken over by Will Pitts, the UK Latte Art Champion. Its open every day, and serves high end specialty coffee, amazing breakfast with seasonal products, and will be doing some evening in the future too. During lockdown, Forts has specialised in making massive (expensive) sandwiches For record lovers, Cliffs is further up Northdown road. You can flick through vinyl, whilst drinking coffee or beer and wine. Great place for brunch. There is another record shop opposite. BROADSTAIRS Posillipo £7 taxi ride away in Broadstairs. Rustic Italian serving traditionol Neopolitan food. If you can get a sea view seat outside in the summer, it’s actual heaven. If you decide to venture to Broadstairs, then Morellis is a must for icecream lovers. A traditional Italian gelato bar that hasn’t changed in 30 years - it’s a Thanet institution! Stark in Broadstairs 1 Michelin star Tiny restaurant with amazing food. (Master Chef Winner) Wyatt and Jones is another restaurant in Broadstairs if you want something more upmarket. They also have a fish and chip attached for takeaway that Is amazing call Flotsam and Jetsam. Please note some places might not be open on a Monday, so check before you head there.
