This place is a field of barren 'A'ā lava rock. It's a place to visit because of its importance in Hawaiian history. In 1819 Kekuaokalani and his wife Manono died in a battle here fighting to retain the old Hawaiian religion of Kapu after Kamehameha II abolished the Kapu System. Only about 300 people died in the fighting but the battle utterly ended the Kapu System and changed Hawai'i. Christian missionaries arrived a few months later and were, after a time, allowed to preach the Christian faith to the Hawaiian public who, at the time, had no religious faith. After King Kamehameha II and Prime Minister Ka'ahumanu embraced Christianity, it became the official religion of Hawai'i.
