Because of its size, the statue of Neptune is called “il Gigante” (the Giant), or “al Żigànt” in Bolognese dialect. It was built in 1566 according to the inscription at the base of the fountain.
The incredible 16th-century fountain has been recently restored. Those 'in the know' know that Neptune was sculpted so that when viewed from a certain angle, the viewer sees what seems to be the sea god's rather large, erect penis!
The Fountain of Neptune (Italian: Fontana di Nettuno) is a monumental civic fountain located in the eponymous square, Piazza del Nettuno, next to Piazza Maggiore, in Bologna, Italy. Its bronze figure of Neptune, extending his reach in a lordly gesture of stilling and controlling the waters, is an early work by Giambologna, completed about 1567.
Amazing fountain dedicated to rivers of the world, with quite erotic mermaids on it. Made by architect Giambologna, it has also another "erotic" secret, ask me if you want to know ;)
