Søborg Castle can be dated back to the 12th century, when Archbishop Eskild built the first castle, a closed fortress with a ring wall and moat. In the Middle Ages, the castle was one of Denmark's largest and best fortified castles and has occasionally also been used as a prison. Several kings have at times stayed at the castle and Valdemar Atterdag's daughter Margrethe was born at Søborg Castle. At the castle arose a small market town, Søborg, whose large and monumental from approx. year 1180 is definitely worth a visit. It was built as a market town church in connection with Søborg Castle. The castle was located by Søborg Lake, which was drained in 1872-96 by digging a canal that empties into Gilleleje.
