This garden was huge. Given Hobart has a population of about 250k, I was expecting something simple. Instead we arrived to a place that had several themed areas and plentiful options to sit and relax, or have a picnic with kids or friends. There is a Japanese garden that I thought was a good attempt at the castle gardens found in Japan (which are much older and expensively maintained so they charge entry). Donation recommended but no other fees. Difficult to get there by foot, don't let the maps fool you it is not a short easy walk from the CBD.

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, which cover an area of approximately 14 hectares is Australia's second-oldest established in 1818. These gardens are home to the largest collection of mature conifers in the Southern Hemisphere and it also has the only subantarctic plant house in the world. Very pretty to wonder through, sit and have a picnic or have lunch at the restaurant. It adjoins Government House which was built in 1855 and is of Gothic Revival style.
