The Zappeion Palace, or simply Zappeion, is one of the most important buildings in Athens. It is located south of the National Garden and the old Palaces and west of the Panathenaic Stadium.
Built between 1874 and 1888 by architect Th. Hansen, it hosted some of the most important moments of the country's modern history, such as European sessions, election results and important political announcements. The funding for the erection was made by the cousins of Zappa, whose statues are in front of the mansion.
"Zapion" is a complex, former residence of a great Greek donor, named Zapas, which nowadays serves all the congresses and ceremonies of the European Union when they are taking place in the Greek capital. The rest of the time, many exhibitions and cultural events take place there.
