Like a well balanced IPA, the Soulard neighborhood manages to mix a wide variety of eclectic ingredients into a satisfying whole. Anchored by the fabulous Soulard Market on the north (with an astounding array of produce and goods on display), this neighborhood is peppered with beautiful classic architectural treasures, and offers a dizzying selection of watering holes and restaurants spanning numerous cuisines. Oh, and did we mention it’s home to the third-biggest Mardi Gras celebration in the world? Laissez les bon temps rouler, St. Louis style.

Fun for food, bar hopping or just a historic stroll among great St Louis brick. This is a good place for a party atmosphere.

I call Soulard "The Little French Quarter" because it reminds me so much of the french quarter in New Orleans, LA. You'll love the french architecture, the people and the food! St. Louis claims to have the biggest Mardi Gras event outside of New Orleans. It all goes down in Soulard, St. Louis' Mardi Gras hub, but there are a number of other balls and parades that take place all over town. St. Louis prides itself on the New Orleans-style cuisine it offers during Mardi Gras and there are plenty of highly recommended restaurants where you can enjoy it. If you'll be traveling with kids, try celebrating at the St. Louis Zoo. Admission is free and kids can make masks, listen to music, and join in a special parade.

Nestled between the Anheuser-Busch brewery to the south, and the famous Soulard Market to the North, Soulard is St. Louis’ first established neighborhood. The faintest aroma of hops permeates the morning air of this National Historic District. Today, the nearly 40 bars, restaurants and quirky shops that are scattered throughout the narrow tree-lined streets, are housed in centuries-old two-story brick row houses. And every one of them has an elaborate outdoor courtyard, patio or sidewalk area from which to enjoy the amenities. Restaurant and bar flavorings vary from Cajun, Mexican and Italian, to sports, blues and gin joints, among others. Neighborhood establishments have collected a bevy of awards including: Bogart’s Smokehouse (“America’s Best Ribs”); Capitalist Pig BBQ (“The 100 Best Barbecue Restaurants in America”), The Porch (“Best Gift Shop”); John D. McGurk’s Irish Pub (“Best Irish Pub in St. Louis”); and Sidney Street Café (James Beard award-winning chef). Fast forward to winter – this little historic community knows how to throw a world-renowned party. For modern day revelers, the area plays host to the third largest Mardi Gras Festival in the world. The spectacular Mardi Gras Grand parade, which draws hundreds of thousands of people, includes more than 100 floats, Mardi Gras Krewes, Cajun music, copious amounts of hurricanes, and beads, beads and more beads. So come to Soulard where you can live history – and have a blast doing so.
