If you want to venture further afield, you can't go past the Orokonui Eco Sanctuary - a beautiful cafe and gift shop, and if you want to it is well worth the $20.00 entry fee (Adult) for exploring a native bird paradise. (Tip: Walk down to the tallest tree in New Zealand, a Eucalyptus!)

Orokonui is an ecosanctuary surrounded by a predator-proof fence. It's part of a cloud forest and you'll see kaka, South island robins, tui, bellbirds and takahe in particular. Also the otago skink, long fin eels and jewelled gecko. Go early to see the kaka mucking about and being playful.
